no idea. but in black and white works.

Meh, the white flaps and dual logos looks stupid, the actual logo that's surrounding the monogram is shite and it looks ill fitting.

I'm more optimistic about the fact that maybe we actually can work with the monogram on merch.

There is something a bit embarrassing about a grown adult human being wearing attire brightly splashed with the club logo and splashes of teal around the place, say, to the shops. Most supportwear is a bit full on for day to day walking around, and more suited to going to the football.

The PA monogram caps were subtle enough that they look like any other baseball cap, but let you proudly represent the club in a way that isn't garish or obvious. They look subtle and understated and actually go with other clothing I might be wearing.

If people want to wear something with brighter and more in-your-face PAFC branding, that's totally up to them. I don't want to do that. The PA monogram hats give me another option and they've been arguably the most popular non-guernsey item we've ever sold.

You're spot on about how garish a lot of the gear is & how it's a turn off & I'll agree that the monogram cap is a simple, sophisticated looking item (not because of the monogram btw) & for those reasons would appeal to a wider audience, acknowledging that it's quite different to all of the other caps.

Keeping in mind as shown through this thread, the standard of the supporters apparel to date is pretty low - cringeworthy shit included - there's a lot of room for improvement - for well designed & made apparel that incorporates official PAFC branding that conveys the brands message in a tasteful way that supporters would still be proud to wear to games & to the shops.

As I have said before Im pretty sure there are no guidelines for apparel/apparel branding enforced by the club & the third party suppliers just offer up a lot of shit (that suits them) & then copy the same template & formula for the next club too.

that's irrelevant. It's not our logo, it's not our branding. It doesn't represent our club. Wear it if you like, but you're promoting anything & everything "PA" not PAFC.
Not every piece of club merchandise needs to incorporate our logo. It is. It does.

Exactly.

I love understated merch. You get to support your club financially, rep the club on the sly and don't feel like a socially challenged mallingerer you'd find anywhere from Hollywood Plaza to Collonades at 11:14 on a weekday morning.

The PAFC hoodie, the PA New Era hats and merch like it says, "We Are Port Adelaide *nod*".

Random fist devices, teal polar fleeces and massive official logos say "I GO FOR PORT POWER I ALSO LIKE CUSTARD EXCUSE ME DO YOU HAVE 2 DOLLARS I NEED TO CATCH THE OBAHN TO NOARLUNGA DOWNS".

i respectfully disagree - rather, in some form it should. It is our brand, our identiy - it should be promoted where appropriate. Isn't that the whole idea of brands/branding/merchandise in the first place?

It doesn't have to be so in your face.

The first and only responsibility of club merch is to sell.

Good points, I like the understated merch approach too - the club could be killing it. But the club needs to work closer with its suppliers instead of accepting shit.

I also get your last point about fists, but hiding behind a monogram doesn't make anyone better than the "custard lovers" too - they'll be all over the PA monogram shortly too, & then what will you do?

tell that to adelaide, brisbane, collingwood, fremantle, hawthorn, melbourne, richmond, west coast, western bulldogs. They don't even have their logo on their home guernsey.

You forgot the "& to promote your brand" part.

The only brand promotion on merch comes through value for sponsors.

Guernseys. Media polos.

In terms of everyday wear, who cares? Would the club rather sell 1000 understated hoodies or 100 hoodies with a massive Power logo on the front, because 'brand awareness'? For what purpose?

It's not about one-upmanship, it's about what looks good.

Yeh I agree.
What can you do though? We're a football club, not a fashion label.
What can we do? Make some lower key merch with the monogram which a) looks great b) sells more than generic ugly shite because it looks great and c) promotes the brand with a classy look.

We can keep the club logo, I like the club logo, it's good as a club logo. It isn't good as a logo on merchandise and as such, I'd much prefer that we go down the monogram path and use that as our merchandise 'brand'. The aim should be to make the monogram easily identifiable with the PAFC.
