AC/DC has to be one of the most overrated entities in the history of music. They just seem like such an acquired taste. I can't stand the vocals, and everyone that came into dick smith and stood and watched the concerts we had on the TVs was always wearing thongs and a wifebeater.

Pretty over them, never understood the love and I'm generally huge on rock and metal.

The song Hells Bells was a huge statement regarding where acdc were going. Pity the rest of the album and everything since has been so disappointing. Just my opinion.

The fact that they were any good, are world renowned and without doubt Australia's (they founded the band here, who cares where they were born) biggest rock export gives them the license to do whatever the **** they want as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, every song sounds the same, but that's because they defined that sound as their own.

You don't have to like it or understand it, but you should be able to appreciate that.

I think the album as a whole is a classic, but it was basically the last great album they made.

Black Ice was a classic IMO. Wouldn't have been a bad album to retire on in hindsight.

I can't pull up everyone that says something about AC/DC I don't agree with, but that is an odd and inconsistent opinion. Please explain?

Ok, like I said it's just my opinion.
Before Bon's death ACDC were mainly a tough, cheeky hard rock band, with Bon's tongue firmly in his cheek. I quite like this incarnation. Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, High Voltage, all great songs and offered a realistic toughness not really seen in rock at the time. (I'm sure others will give examples to bite this, but I don't think others kept the authenticity whilst enjoying the success ACDC did)

After Bon died they could of gone Mk 2 but went with Brian, a proven singer with a tough pedigree. When Hells Bells starts with that tolling bell & goes into the dark figure we all know it signalled an edgier path.
Out of the pubs and onto the street toughness maybe? The cheekiness had gone and they seemed "serious". Then they went and did clever songs like Shook Me All Night long etc that to me weren't quite as good as what had Bon's mojo on it.

Look, they're a good band. They have a durability most bands would sell their souls for. When I first started figuring out music for myself (early eighties) we were saturated in ACDC pumping out formulaic safe music they knew fans would buy. I got drawn to punk, post punk, early thrash which was more interesting to me than rocking out to another ACDC offering. In the past five or so years I've rediscovered some of their works & enjoy rocking out with the kids. The repetitive riffs of early Bon era are a great conduit to get the kids into rock music.
If you can enjoy them, more power to you. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

tl/dr if you like them, good. they had an uninspiring period when I found music.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, well explained and I see your point and can't really argue it, except for one thing. They weren't pumping out music of that style cause they knew the fans would buy it, they were doing music like that because that is their thing, their style. That's like saying Port Adelaide has a history of only playing football the fans would enjoy and not because it's our best style that we want to play that wins games.

I agree it woulda been great if AC/DC did go darker and heavier, but you can't fault the direction they went instead. KISS for example went in that direction during their no face paint period, and it didn't endear them.

If they weren't Australian people wouldn't be too bothered.

Rubbish.

Say what you like about their limited chord arrangements, but they wrote some absolutely kick ass rock.

As far as guitar playing goes, he's no virtuoso, but Angus has a fantastic left hand.

For the record I'm firmly in team Bon... But Brian has been as good as they'd ever hoped, and whilst they faded quickly from Blow Up Your Video onwards, their early stuff with Brian is also classic.

You Shook Me can go **** itself however.

I think AC/DC just ran out of ideas I the end. They have a formula now that works pretty well but the level of songwriting and lyrical content that they had from 74-81 just isn't there anymore, and that's fine. They're a huge stadium rock band and people will always pay big money to hear the multitude of hits.
Everything up to and including Back In Black was brilliant IMO. The next couple of albums were fairly solid but they went through a very inconsistent period for the next 25 years. A couple of great songs here and there but nothing amazing. (You're right though, edgie Black Ice was decent!) That's just what happens to bands that have toured and recorded for decades on end.
It does annoy me somewhat that the casual observer, who probably gets as annoyed by Who Made Who as much as I do, will probably not give an album like Powerage a chance and won't discover the dirty swagger of a song like Gone Shootin. I guess over-exposure will do that to a person.

I think I acquired a distaste based on the fanbase, I think of AC/DC and I think of playing a gig and genuinely having pissed bogans in singlets shouting 'play sum acca dacca'! I can't hear one of their songs without the though of VB swilling inbreds in their busted up VC Commodore. I can't be objective now.

It's like how I grew a hatred for Metallica from sharing a room with my brother who would never stop playing Ride The Lightning.

What does Led Zeppelin have to do with it?

As if that didn't make you love em. Their best album.

Powerage is their best, and there's a fair few celebrities musos ala Keith Richard who agree.
