ok with me mate, wannabe, imitation American merch just ain't my thing.
Ha ha! I think I'm in that 5% but I don't look like a freak. Seriously!For 95% of heads, a bent brim 59fifty will look better than a 39thirty.
If you're in the other 5%, hat style selection is probably the least of your worries.

Baller tops? That Richmond tank looks like some cheap Aussie NBL shit right there.
Why?I'll take a stab in the dark here and say the average person who goes for this sort of stuff spends more money on official club merch than you do at a ratio of at least 10 to 1. In other words, this stuff sells, and the people who like it are the people who are happy to throw $120 down on a particular item at the drop of a hat.
It's one thing to whinge incessantly about stuff you don't like, but why? The club offers plenty of alternatives to cater to numerous tastes. I'm sure the Port Store bargain bin would contain enough stuff to keep you happy at any given time, so everyone wins. Or, why don't you throw up some of your ideas.
Why?
S'pose it's just more of a cultural thing - I totally get the collegiate/varsity appeal of American brands & sports, but have always thought it inappropriate when it comes to the identity of our native game.
From a merch perspective I've always thought that the EPL clubs do a good job - they seem to be in control of what they deem an appropriate representation of their league - the AFL is just a free for all with all manner of confused & substandard gear - & I think it's because there was so much shit in the market in the first place that people are eating this US inspired gear up - because to them it has some semblance of authenticity compared to the shit at Target.
I'm not entirely sure what would encapsulate it today - but then, I came from the ripple sole, beanie, scarf & toggled duffle coat & sew on patches era.... I just don't think that gear inspired by baller tops, gridiron shirts, ice hockey jersey etc does. But what would you come up with that best represents the "native game" aesthetic? Club merchandise is there to be moved off the shelves, not to sit there for a year before heading to the bargain bin. I'm not a particular fan of the basketball singlet myself either, but it's coming and I'm not particularly fussed that it is. I just won't buy one. Simple. I love the PA caps though.
I'd be interested to hear some of your ideas for items that best encapsulate our "native game".

One thing is for sure. Tucking your ears in will never be cool. Ever.
Don't bet on it.

If looking like Urkel can become fashionable then anything is possible.
