They won't be scrapping it next year because the AFL along with the Victorian Government are rolling out the red carpet for the NFL in the bye week.

One could argue resting players in round 23 didn't do Fremantle any good anyway as they weren't impressive in their qualifying final win against Sydney and were outplayed by Hawthorn in the prelim final.

Had nothing to do with Fremantle resting players. They were in horrible form, by far the worst minor premiers in history and hadn't played a good game in months. Everyone expected them to go out in straight sets, they only limped past the Swans when Buddy withdrew due to mental health issues, otherwise they are out in week 2. And the Swans, who they barely beat, lost to 8th placed North the next week - clearly not playing well themselves.
