It's a better way to save the environment than slashing tyres. Taxing big cars will make you think about buying a smaller car. Add another $100 to $200 per years on your rego and all of a sudden a 4 cylinder hatch back looks more appealing to a lot of people than a tank. You can still choose to drive a bigger car but you pay for the cost to society. Seems fair to me.
I don't think $100-$200 a year would be much of a deterrent to people getting the car they really want to be honest.
