How does a young actor or actress get to play a serious role without just being an adjunct to some old man or woman `rediscovering their youth' or some such crap?

Juno did brilliantly because it was thoughtful and young. Girls is a brilliant show because it is thoughtful and young. Are they as great as hyped? No, but at least they exist.

So, I'm at some roadworks with traffic lights' red signal showing and the drivers side window of the commodore in front of me slowly comes down and through the opening a cigarette butt gets thrown out. I mean why? The wind blows the still lit cancer stick-end...sparks a-flying, underneath it's owners vehicle, and I am half hoping a fume of some sort will ignite a punishment unknown before in this perpetrators' existence...but no it did not happen. *sigh*
