It's a bit like how DXHR is a poor imitation of the original Deus Ex, which is arguably the best game ever made. They just didn't get what made Deus Ex so good and so they made a boring typical modern action game that misses the entire point.
Never played the original but put me down as another who liked DXHR.

By modern formulaic AAA action game standards, DXHR is good.

But it misses what made the original so good.

Video games, in an attempt to be taken seriously as "art" have disappeared up their own arse with boring linear narrative overproduced crap instead of embracing what makes the medium unique: player agency.

I try not get in to debates about DX, because I have an unhealthy obsession with it, and a tendency to take criticism of it personally.

I probably replay Deus Ex every year or two. Up until a couple of years ago, I was still finding little secrets that I hadn't before. It's got amazing depth.
I don't understand the argument about it being too old - with all mods for it, they bring it up to more modern level. It was never the prettiest game to start with.

I really enjoyed DX:HR. I do understand the criticisms from fans of the original though.

While I'd love a true sequel to DX, it just wouldn't work from a commercial sense.
It's a fine line Eidos had to tread between keeping old fans happy, while keeping the modern gamers attention.
It's far from being a true sequel, but I think they did well.

I thought they treated Deus Ex: HR as a spiritual successor to the original like what Bioshock is to System Shock.

I do not know how many arguments i have gotten into on gaming forums about Deus Ex, all fans treat criticism as if someone has just driven a stake through their hearts.

Speaking of all this gaming, one of my favourite Australian gaming communities games.on.net have just announced iinet has pulled the plug and the site is shutting down and next year all iinet game servers are going to be "under review"

If you regularly play online shooters and play on GON servers [the majority of them] well those may be going soon too.

Sad day.

Yeah, scrub that, that was a terrible analogy.

What i mean was that HR is based in the same universe but is no way related to the original game.
Nope

The main character in the original is a clone of Adam Jensen or some shit

Meh. Games on net servers were just generic big servers weren't they? Small independant servers with a close knit community >>

Is that official "canon" or just something they created to try can crowbar a link between HR and the original?

When HR was released it was all canon, it was referred to as a prequel.
However since working on HR's sequel, they seem to be going down the road of making their own canon to allow them more creative freedom.

Scrub that, I think I got the lore wrong.

From what i can gather, HR was a prequel to the original. I suppose Denton being a clone as Jensen sorta makes sense as he would have been the basis of all future human augmentations.

I'll stop now before someone calls me a nerd. :P

I think I mentioned before during the last weekly star wars discussion but I've been playing the bollocks out of the android KotOR port. It's 100% the same game and so much more fun than I remember originally.

I wouldn't try it on a phone though, is great on 7 inch.

I don't quite take criticism (of Deus Ex) personally but it does let me form an opinion about what sort of games you like very quickly.

You like graphics and/or you like what you get told to like and have no desire to explore anything more interesting.

Deus Ex is an undeniable god tier game. It's not my favourite game, but it's the game where I will probably have the biggest crack at someone for saying something negative about it.

But as i said before i just don't understand why Deus Ex fans get so defensive when someone criticises this particular game, i have been in numerous arguments about the very subject.

And here's me wondering why I get every single Assassins Creed that comes out...

What a tired series that is. It basically lost me after the first.

Italy AC was the bomb, dropped quickly away after that.
Edit: Black Flag and Rouge were decent though
Paris was shit, London is slightly better. But the missus likes it, so she always gets 'em - so it gives me something to do until Battlefront comes out.
