That's my entire point. It's slim pickings and it has been for ages. Anymore doesn't just mean in 2015. It's like saying Melbourne don't win flags anymore like they did in the 50s. That doesn't mean they were winning them up until just before I made the comment.

Stop saying innovating. I'm saying innovative. The Sims as a series still gets to claim innovative at this stage, because it's still so unique in an increasingly homogeneous industry.

The Sims 4 came out over a year ago, and is an installment in the most innovative series of all time. Minecraft was initially released in 2009. 2009. Portal in 2007. Video game design is as stagnant as it ever has been and by a long, long way.

DX completely blew my mind when I realised it was possible to kill Anna Navarre on the plane instead of obeying orders to execute the alleged terrorist financer dude. I thought that was a very cool example of player agency with no handholding involved.

Have you checked out Underrail El_Scorcho ? I've been keeping an eye on it lately, might be my next purchase. The developer posts regularly at one of the forums I lurk on. Seems to have a lot of the right ideas.

Agree totally on Deus Ex. I remember seeing an interview with Warren Spector where he was speaking to Deus Ex fans who told him about things they'd done that he didn't even know could be done in the game. The amount of freedom makes it so much fun to play.

The Sims 1 and the Sims 4 are wildly different games.

The Sims 1 is a glorified tamagotchi, with all your play time basically devoted to fulfilling basic needs.

Probably by the Sims 3 it had opened up enough in this respect that you could really start to have some fun with the world.

There's been enough technologically advancement to clearly draw a line and say 2004 isn't "modern", it's closer to the days of Half Life and Fallout than now.

Seems to be a fully functional Pipboy that controls your character pipboy from your phone,
With or without the actual pipboy hardware.
Why you would want such a thing is beyond me when it is probably easier and faster to do it in the game.

If you want to try put a time on modern gaming, I'd say the modern era would start around 2001 - Sega quitting the console business, Sony strengthening it's lead, and Microsoft entering the fray.
PC gaming doesn't have generations as such, but this would be about the time when console gaming (and thus their generations) would start to impact more on PC gaming.
