the best thing about being young is everyone knows your pop culture references ...
You've never considered that works in reverse too, for older posters? Plenty of references on this board with stuff from as far back as the 70s. Youff!

as you get older they become obscure distant specks, so when you find someone who knows what you're talking about you instantly become buds
I dunno I'm 19 and my reference hit rate around my mates is like one in a hundred

Not sure 'Journey of the Monkey King Skeleton Demon' is anything to do with that great old show.

Has the same headband, flies on a cloud, plucks his staff from his hair, has a monk, pig and sea creature as companions, based on the Monkey King from Chinese mythology.

Nup, not the same at all. I'm sorry

I'm calling you out as too young to have watched Monkey when it came out. Through India, China etc there's a squillion stories featuring Hanuman or whatever other names he's known as.

It was my favourite program as a little kid, and have rewatched it repeatedly as an adult. I'm very fond of it. I was born in 1980. Is that OK pops?

Watches Dark Night. "It's not Batman because his suit isn't blue and it's not Adam West"

It was a late 70s show, so there's a story there about how you even got to see it. I don't doubt you did but someone must have guided you to their secret stash of videos or something. Surprisingly for such a popular show I don't think it got repeated much.

It was on ABC in the early 80's. In the afternoon IIRC. Heaps of people I know who are my age are into it.

Late 80s and early 90s after-school afternoons would've been when us 1980ers saw it. Also I seem to remember they played the odd episode during Recovery in the mid 90s.

Speaking of great old Japanese shit on the Afternoon Show with James Valentine and later Michael Tunn: The Mysterious Cities of Gold

It was repeated almost as often as Doctor Who episodes with Tom Baker as the Doctor

Cool. Study, girlfriend etc must have diverted me away. But seriously courtesy of a one-time friendship with the ethnic Chinese/Vietnamese fruit shop owner who used to have a shop near us I've seen quite a few DVDs of Asian ghost/demon films. King Monkey appears a lot but not the happy, semi-loyal character from Monkey. The feel of that show can't be recreated, it wasn't even the same when the Pigsy actor changed.

Looks like this will be a good way to work out all our ages, a question in your profile when you sign up about your viewing experiences with Monkey.
