You are implying no one at all did it tough in the 80's which is incorrect Mr Bandt.
No, I'm saying that trying to argue that saying people had it tough in the 80s too in order to downplay the absolutely outrageous housing affordability situation in 2016 is disingenuous and misses the point.

I know you all think you are the hardest done by people on the planet but "aussie battler" wasn't coined in the last 10 years.

People have always struggled with the great Australian dream of owning their own piece of dirt.

But until you have walked up a driveway with your best mate and found his dad dead in his car (gassed himself) after interest rates hit almost 18% then you can't compare and miss the point.

You know what they didn't have such a massive sense of in the 80's?

Entitlement.

Reds. Klopp. Sturridge. Europe. Cup final. Lads. Lads. Lads.

Do you have to win it to get in the Champions League next season?

Where is the final?

And well done to the bindippers.

Yep. Our season is toast if we don't win this. We're 8th in the league so it's up to you lot to shut the scum out of the top 4.

Game's in Switzerland. Sevilla are gunning for 3 Europa League titles in a row. Gonna be hyuuuuuuuuuuuge.

Fair chance it will be a better game than the Champions League final...

If we beat the Arse then we keep the rag scum out of the top four but it also means that there will be no St Totteringham day this year.

That would be sad.

United is sufficiently worse than Tottenham. Take solace in the fact that Tottenham bottled it in the most petulant fashion at the bridge.

Again, disingenuous.

Nobody is arguing that it was easy for every single person in the 80s.

What is absolutely undeniable is that housing affordability wasn't the problem it is now. It was a very realistic goal for a person or family on an average single income to afford a home.

We aren't talking about the poor here, we're talking about people on an single income average salary form whom housing anywhere near cities is more difficult every year.

That is a good point my favourite little Gen Y'er.

Whats disingenuous about a middle class family man taking his life because he couldn't afford his house?

Isn't that we are talking about?

My point isn't that it was harder then, it wasn't. My point is that you aren't the first generation to struggle but you are certainly the most vocal about it. Yes you have more mediums to whinge through but give it a rest for a second. Sit down with your parents and grandparents, great grandparents if you have them. Learn about what they struggled through.

Yeah, things were very tough in the 80's even for a working couple with no kids but I would hate to be in my 20's now and trying to buy a house.

Luckily when I left Adelaide I rented my house out, and yes, I did negative gear. When I returned to Adelaide after 10 years away I would not have been able to afford buy back into the same area.

What's disingenuous is that you're using an emotional example to play down the issue and trying to turn it into an entitlement issue, which is absolutely ridiculous.

It's not millenials being greedy. The average mortgage repayment is more than 50% of the average fortnightly salary in Australia in 2016.

In the 80s it was more like 15%.

It's not comparable and trying to use the entitlement argument is the typical conservative bullshit of blaming entrenched poverty on the poor so nobody looks at the rich while they fleece everyone.

Again, I'm a financially comfortable homeowner. It's not whinging from my perspective, it's an undeniable crisis.

Maybe that's the solution, everyone leave Adelaide.

No I'm using an example that remains fresh in my mind of how tough it is.

I have not once said it isn't tough now, it is, that is reality. I am saying it is and always has been hard. There have been recessions and depressions that have caused more misery and poverty than what is happening now because there wasn't the social services and government housing available to people.

You don't have to buy a house you know, it isn't compulsory.

I don't want to overstep the mark but I'm sure there were many more factors involved in what happened to your mate's dad than just interest rates.

He still had his job but the bank was foreclosing on his house. The guy left a note. He was a proud man that was too embarrassed to to front his wife and children and say they had to leave.

Yes it was that simple.
