I am surprised the Adelaide Strikers aren't on the cricket list, two seasons in a row finish top only to be bundled out by the 4th place team.

Seems like an Adelaide thing to finish 1st in the regular and then not make the Grand Final.

We did it. The Crows did it. Adelaide United did it. Now the Strikers.

Fruchocs melting in the heat of battle.

I like how the media are calling a DDOS a "hack". It really isn't. It's just spamming a website with false traffic to make it crash. It's not "SOME CHINAMAN LOGGED INTO YOUR ACCOUNT AND FLOGGED YOUR WIFE, DOG AND RESIDENCY STATUS"

There isn't any evidence to support that it was a DDOS attack, the most likely outcome is that the ABS way underestimated the traffic and the servers couldn't handle the load.

The gubment stuffed up by shouting that everyone had to do it last night and not telling everyone that they could complete it any time they wanted before the 9th.

It isn't like the Census press is open about the actual due date, it continually pushed the whole Tuesday night is census night, everybody get on and do it!

Got what they deserved

Nah, they're just a fairly mediocre mob who never go into tournaments expected to win. I reckon Australia's men's hockey team has gone into every Olympics I can remember as raging hot favoirite.

Not so much England being expected to win, just expected do better than embarrassing themselves and their country.

Yep, should have staggered it and have it up over 3 - 4 weeks. Then advertise different states to start every 2-3 days. Let others do early, but don't advertise it as being available. It's hardly like trying to hit a concert ticket buy at 9.30.000000 when the site opens up. You don't get bonus points from the government for doing it before anyone else and if some people / states had done the bulk before other states started it doesn't matter. Poor planning all round.

It's not as if we are privvy to the connection and traffic logs of the census website. So unless they release the logs, it's difficult to say it either was or wasn't a DDOS attack. The mention of DDOS is either an attempt to save face or genuine. Either way, it's not anything anyone should be concerned about.

England losing on penalties is not even a meme, it is an expectation and to do so regularly is EXACTLY choking.
If you're regularly expected to win but regularly lose instead, you're serial chokers. If you're regularly expected to lose and you lose regularly, then you're just shite.

England are certainly regularly expected to win. The fact that they don't surprises them every time.

They have choked to different degrees since 1966.

1970 - expected to win...came 8th
1974 - failed to qualify
1978 - failed to qualify
1982 - expected to win - was LOL!
1986 - Hand of LOL...expected to final at least.
1990 - Hahahahaha GAZZA...and penalties choke
1994 - LOL
1998 - Penalties choke again!
2010 -England suffered its most resounding World Cup defeat (4–1 to Germany) in the Round of 16, after drawing with the United States and Algeria.
2014 - Another big choke in Group stage.

That's just the World Cups! From the nation who invented the game with the biggest league in the world and some of the greatest players ever to grace the field.

What I find ludicrous about the DDOS claim is that compressing your traffic of ~5 million users into a 1-2 hour window is a self-made DDOS attack, where you've invited the responses and advertised to the rest of the world when and where it will be.

Let's take them at their word and say that there were some 'uninvited' hits amongst the anticipated census traffic, the troublemakers, (I refuse to call them 'hackers'), would only have to tip the scales slightly to have a catastrophic impact. Any 14yo with a downloadable script can pull that off.

People were predicting this exact scenario weeks ago.

It was always going to happen. I'd love to see the load testing they did. "These tests show it will crash." "let's just see how it goes."

No one wants to fill out the paper one, did they think the typical Australian family sits around the table and fills in the census or something? It would be one delegated person from the household told to fill out the census online, lol.

The census isn't actually due til September

Fuark, first time I've ever completed an assignment before the due date.

Can anyone give me a reasonable answer as to why the Census is asking for business financial information?
Isn't this covered with the thousands I spend with my accountant every year?

My guess would be, the ABS could get that data anonymously from the ATO, but getting it though the Census allows them to cross-reference the data with your other demographic info.

Most of the data that the tin foil hat brigade are up in arms about being in the census is already held by other Federal government agencies.

Addresses, dates of birth, number of children, income, are already held by the government in agencies such as the ATO, AEC and Medicare. As you say the idea of the census is to cross reference this data with other demographic data which is only collected by the ABS.

Golden State Warriors became the ultimate chokers in the past NBA season, has to be the greatest single event choke ever
Undefeated patriots v the 10-6 New York Giants in the 08 Super Bowl, the Giants didn't even win the nfc east...

I was reading a post from someone on Twitter that showed the load testing that they did was for 1 million requests* per hour throughout the day when in actual fact, they needed to allow for 1 million requests every 10 mins from 7pm AEST until 9pm AEST. They apparently didn't anticipate the bottleneck.

(*tech talk simplified)

I actually remember doing this as a kid. I also remember doing it in a share house in the mid 90s.
