Getting paid twice as much to work on a Sunday is and always has been a stupid idea. If you don't want to work on a Sunday, go work in an industry that doesn't do most of it's business on weekends.

Yeah, it's not like we need people to staff our police stations and hospitals on Sundays anyway.

Many casuals may not be entitled to penalty rates given their inflated regular wage over permanent workers to begin with.

All casual workers in hospitality are entitled to penalty rates.

One of the big arguments against extended shopping hours in South Australia was that retail workers need to spend Sundays with their families, unlike emergency services and hospital workers.

Give me examples of places in the world where there is a 10-15% tax bump on weekends.
Are you drunk?

Call a plumber on Sunday.
Book a caravan plot in school holidays.
Book a hotel in Melbourne on Grand Final weekend.

Businesses change their pricing according to market forces *all the time*

I really disagree with pretty much everything you say

As usual, the reduction in penalty rates has led to all number of people on my facebook up in arms how they now won't be able to afford their rent/clothing/food/life, even though a) if they read the announcement properly, almost all of those complaining won't actually be effected at all and b) it equates to about $12 a shift that they will be missing out on.
So we're making this change because $12 per shift per employee, that you don't even pay every employee apparently, is sending companies broke? But it doesn't impact on employees?
LOL

hahaha I genuinely laughed out loud. The lack of logic is astonishing.

I reckon when you sign up to be a copper or a nurse, Sunday penalty rates wouldn't even be considered in the decision making process.

With nursing it makes 0.6 and 0.8 FTE feasible in terms of a living wage.

If you took away penalty rates you'd have foreclosures and repossessions galore.

Emergency services being 24/7 has always been a thing. Retail hasn't until relatively recently. As I said earlier, some people should have an expectation of what they're getting in to when they apply for certain sectors. It's also a profession and there are professional salaries on offer. Retail is just something most people do to put food on the table and pay electricity bills, and for a long time it was too just a Monday to Friday, maybe Saturday job.

They are different. Also, it's public vs private.

And they're all paid well, opposed to the latter, and most of them can afford to choose to not work Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays.

I'm also skeptical on labelling most trades highly skilled, sparkies definitely as I don't like messing with electricity, but give me enough free time and I can sort out my own plumbing issues thanks.

Gotta be more than $12 for retail and pharmacy workers based on this chart wharfie put up a few pages back.

$20-$23 /hr is the base rate for most people covered by the adult retail award. so a cut from 200% to 150% is worth around $10/hr. 6 hours work on Sunday is a $60 pre tax cut - tax + medicare levy is 35% ie $21 which means $39 worse off.

Yep. Comparing Retail or hospitality to a GP or Dentist or even a Plumber is also stupid. These are highly skilled professions, compared to say a Barista, Drinks Mixologist or Sandwich Technician.

:D haven't heard that one before, but I like it!

I can remember when cafes and restaurants used to charge an additional cover charge for Sundays. I wonder why they stopped doing that?

I can remember when you had to have a meal to get a beer on Sundays.

You ever tried eating on acid?

Thank God those awful days are over.

I remember the days when the only place you could get a drink after 10.30pm in the 'burbs during the week or Sunday was a pizza bar.

Those of us old enough to remember Lennies on a Sunday night when you were handed a plate of .. I will go out on a limb and say dog food, which you promptly put down on the nearest table and voila you were drinking in a nightclub on a Sunday night.

Please let there be someone on this board old enough to remember this.

Ding, Ding, Ding. That's what you get from studying hard or working hard towards completing an apprenticeship. You get rewarded for it.

Because **** those for what ever reason are unable to study or complete an apprenticeship?
