JPod and Barlow made it on there own, these guys are on some gimmick tv show and they won't even be able to play as the won't be on the senior or even rookie list, they'll have a spot similar to an international rookie which aren't allowed to play. These guys aren't good enough to scrap a late rookie draft selection
You don't think someone could pop up on a TV show, get drafted & become a good AFL footballer? Isn't that the Russell Robertson story?

Its a seppo idea. They did it last year for an UDFA to get a shot to walk on with a NFL team at training camp. Was on Spike TV in US hosted by Dion Sanders I think it was…

Bad idea and didn't work well but true to form, what is good for the US must be good for us…

Next we will see AFL Hardknocks in preseason….

Truth be told, that would probably work out well and rate highly….

Go Catters

ps - I want a producer credit when it goes….

What's so terrible about it?

Bit of a myth.

Russell Robertson was selected at age 18 by Melbourne at Pick #68 in the 1996 National Draft, after representing the Tassie Mariners in the TAC Cup competition, as well as the Burnie Dockers in the TFL in during 1996. He was then de-listed, and picked up again shortly after by the Demons with Pick #35 in the 1996 Rookie Draft. He wasn't a mature-age pick, didn't have some lengthy slog in the lower leagues trying to get noticed. He was simply a youngster from Tasmania who followed the elite junior pathways and got drafted accordingly, and happened to get a bit of extra exposure on The Footy Show along the way.

4th and Long was hosted by Michael Irvin, the winner ended up being a guy called Jesse Holley who got a development contract with the Dallas Cowboys. He had a 3 year career and won a game for the Cowboys against the 49ers in overtime when he caught a pass for 77 yards.
If the winner of the recruit can stay on an AFL list for 3-4 years and contribute a moment to win a game i'd call that a pass mark

How do you get picked up as a mature draft pick? You play VFL/other state league which usually requires being at a stage in your life that you can commit to playing semi professionally for not much money compared to not spending hours a week training and playing in the ammos (with friends) or local leagues (again with friends or for even more money than VFL). Especially in Victoria with how many kids don't get drafted out of TAC and how rarely VFL players get picked up there's little incentive to keep battling away at it.

I bet Essendon fans are pretty happy with Patty Ambrose and that dogs and tigers fans think Tory Dickson and Sam Lloyd are good enough for AFL. You can add Liam Jurrah. I think they all would've qualified for this show when they were dominating local footy but AFL clubs enticed them to move to the VFL and then drafted them. This show just cuts out the middle man.

Presuming they did their research and sold the show well enough I think you'll find the winner has what it takes to play. The AFL is also planning a draft for the winner to be selected possibly in a bidding process so that indicates clubs will have interest in the winner.

To be honest you sound like a bitter old musician who never made it rambling about Aussie Idol being unfair. And sure after so many seasons of singing shows there isn't that much talent left but it's not like they didn't uncover some quality talents who more than deserved the success they got.

If these players were serious about footy they'd be playing in state leagues already, plenty of people get talked up that they could play afl but they could never handle the mental side of the game if they won't give up a bit of money to play in a state league side.

If they can stay on an AFL list for 4 years it is a massive success.

The player will be rooki listed not senior list. Pass would be elevation to senior list or earning a second contract.

Johann Wagner was signed by Central Districts (SANFL) in the pre-season.

That aside, there is a huge argument about the merits of playing in a state league. A guy I play footy with now was accepted onto the recruit but chose not to pursue it for various reasons. He's a very highly-paid country footballer who spent time in the SANFL system and like many others just could not viably remain in that State league system. Getting paid a pittance, SANFL club enforcing committments to the point where it affects your ability to earn a living in your day job etc etc.

A lot of these guys are not short on talent and are serious about their footy, but a man has to earn a living and playing State league footy makes that difficult for a lot of people.

Is he the guy who paints his fingernails blue?

Also, when was this filmed? I can't imagine Darren Burgess having time to do a reality show during the season.
The indigenous bloke from Kimberley.

Waylen will get drafted even if he misses.
I've heard there are up to 3 or 4 guys outside the winner that are likely to get drafted, recruiters have been to some of their matches (I know they played a game against the Crows reserves at AO after our GC game when we had a bye).

Is there a token black guy, token gay guy and token person with the saddest back story ever?

He was hyped up as a chance before the last draft wasn't he? Definitely remember his name.

Football has changed so much, the best footballers don't get a game the best athletes do I think that's were he might struggle in this thing. I hope he does though.
