I am getting a bit sick and tired of whenever someone says something which goes outside the realm of "political correctness", they are criticised and treated worse than a serial killer.

Here's the fact, people, whether you agree with what Rendell said or not, we have something in this country called "freedom of speech". People are actually allowed to say what they like, provided it doesn't slander someone.

"Freedom of speech" doesn't mean, you are free to say what you like, as long as it agrees with me. It is freedom of speech, regardless of whether you like it or not. If you want freedom of speech, the price you pay is that idiots can have it too, and say idiotic things.

"Freedom of speech" also means that every group of society, no matter what race, creed or colour, are open to accounability and criticism, when warranted. Certain groups shouldn't be protected from any criticism by being able to throw around "racist", "sexist" or "homophobe" at will.

If I ever have those names said to me, I will just consider that the person saying them can't refute my points, and has to resort to childish name-calling as a last resort. Pretty pathetic really.

Rendell was stating an opinion (which the media probably asked him for, so should they be held to account as well ?). If he doesn't want to recruit certain players, again, that is his right. A recruiter can choose whomever he feels is the best "fit" for the club. The mistake Rendell made was talking about it. There is nothing to have stopped him from just ignoring full indigineous players in the draft, and make it look like he didn't pick that player, because they had another player in mind all along. Who would know, and how could anyone stop someone doing that? The punishment might end up being missing out on a player like Natianui or someone of his talent, when Adelaide could have had the player instead.

I don't think that you can say someone is disgusting or disgraceful, unless you have met them, or heard what they are said. Short of them being a criminal or evil person, most of the other "villians" we are introduced to are media creations.

I think Rendell should explore his legal actions, and see if he can't sue for "unfair dismissal". He wasn't fired for incompetence or dishonesty. The last time I looked, you couldn't be fired for "morals or standards", unless they pertain specifically to doing that job to the best of your ability.

Now, a true test of "freedom of speech" is if I get modded, because someone is fearful of the fact that I don't tow the "cowardly" "party line" and am actually defending him to an extent.

This has nothing to do with freedom of speech.

This is about some fella who thinks that his "way of life" is superior to another persons' and stated that he will discriminate against that person because of it.

This has nothing to do with what club one supports and indeed, I commend Mr. Trigg for coming out and saying that there is absolutely no excuse for what Rendell said and left no doubt that Rendell's comment cannot be spun to mean anything else as far as he and the Adelaide Football Club are concerned .

Rendell belongs to what is still, unfortunately, prevalent in this country and that is, to a generation of latent bigots and racists.

What Rendell said is "not to be said in public" because you should only say it "behind closed doors". That is what still happens in this country and when one gets busted for being prejudice "in public", like minded individuals rally around them and shout, "out of context", "misunderstood" or, in real desperation, "freedom of speech"!

Rendell, like DiPierdomenico and other "good blokes", should not be the receivers of any sympathy or compassion and should be labelled with exactly what they are; racists. To do otherwise and be lenient with them, is to cultivate racism and bigotry amongst the younger generations and that is tragic.

Why?....he resigned, he resigned as he knew he went totally against club & AFL policy. By resigning he kept his benefits, if not then he loses. Guy is an absolute trollup and good riddance.

So what is Vlad going to do now that Macca has spoken about the issue? Surely he would have to listen and maybe acknowledge the AFL has gone a little overboard? But it won't happen, guarantee it.

This issue is long from being resolved, Rendell losing his job is just the start of it. The AFC are the only ones here who have acted appropriately IMO, they could only do one thing and that was to sack Rendell, because the AFL would have then hung us out to dry if we didn't. I'm actually less concerned by Misfud now, he never wanted to name names, but the all high and mighty politically correct powers at the AFL demanded an answer. Downright pathetic.

This sums it up perfectly ,well said. It is a pity that most of the other posters didn't think before they put pen to paper. Again well said ,it's great to see someone with the "b:::/lls" to say it .

I think the fact that we keep distinguishing the aborigines from the rest of the AFL society is racist in a sense. It almost as if it us and them. We dont do this for the other cultures in the AFL.

We have indigenous rounds and Aboriginal week etc. Why dont we have a week for the other cultures in the AFL..... oh hang on we do- as of this year have cultural week. See what i mean .......... its all becoming silly.

In a true sense Aboriginals are the true Australians - this was their country and maybe we are now doing all this to pay for the guilt we feel for what the the English did when they came to this country. If we are truly all one why do we keep distinguishing and highlighting our diffrences.

Not entirely relevant to the case, but Ellis-Yolmen had an aborignal mother and a Papua New Guinean father. However, he was brought up almost entirely by his white grandmother (who adopted his mother at a young age), with Scotish and English heritage. She was essentially a "white-parent" to him, if we want to look at it that way...

Besides being morally wrong it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity. By espousing such a policy Rendell had no choice but to go. Let's hope that such a policy does not exist.

I didn't really want to buy in on this thread, but I agree with what Macca said in one of his posts.


If Rendell had said that kids from remote localities have trouble adjusting and more needs to be done to support them, then he would have been correct.
wrt kids from remote localities we can include famous names like Krakouer, Ablett and more. The more remote the locality the harder it is for the kids, indigenous or otherwise.

To say what has been posted that he said, then it is a racist comment, it is hard to think of a more racist comment be it by ignorance or otherwise and there should no place for it. (Note I am talking about the comment and not the person as I and most of us do not know him)

The AFC had no choice but to do what they did. Sad situation all round but good usually has a habit of coming out of bad things and long term his comments may shake things up for the better.

Not to accept it would be a seen as a direct acceptance of his comments.


However, that's a miserable comment from AD. I'd made the assumption that the AFL had done due diligence on this one, when they obviously hadn't at all. Absolutely disgraqceful conduct

Exactly what should have happened. But Trigg is gutless, jumped the gun twice this week to 'protect the brand of the AFC' before he actually stopped and considered what other options he had. If he wasn't gutless, he would have came out on Monday and said 'We have spoken to Bernie, there was nothing in his behaviour on Saturday night that needs to be punished'. And he would have came out on Friday and demanded the AFL provide further information as to what was said and why it was said, rather than just (what seems like to me) forcing Rendell to resign before he was to be sacked. I'm sick of him to be honest. Can you imagine Eddie McGuire doing this? As much as he is hated, at least he would stand up to the AFL and ask for all the facts before making a decision. We have become the AFLs teachers pet, we do anything we can to please them.

I didnt think that what Matt Rendell said indicated that he had a superior way of life. I understood it to be that perhaps having one white parent made them have a "different" way of life, or a more "stable" way of life. I think that pure indiginous folk find it very hard to fit into "normal" ways of living, and just love having the freedom of the land. Not saying that that is a bad way of life, just a different one.

Perhaps we should have a "public hanging" for all these "so called" racists. Good luck with that one. If your going to prosectute people on certain remarks made then 75% of our population would be behind bars.

I would have thought a suspension until we have heard EVERYONES side of the story has come out would have been the appropriate outcome. Then perhaps if he is found to be guilty then some councelling and community service work could be implemented.
