He was all over the Lewis Jetta behinds Situation. Any mention of Jetta in the broadcast, and BANG!

Imagine if he was still coaching, half his team would be considered "pinch hit ruckman" Interesting thought if he was coaching your team who would he consider as ruckman if they were struggling a bit. I'd say Gram, Blake, R.Clarke, Goddard, Gilbert, Fisher, Dawson and Riewoldt would all be thrown in at some stage.

Dean Bailey has already subscribed to the Robert Walls pinch-hitting ruckman theory. I still can't get over seeing Colin Sylvia rucking.

The weird thing is, as far as I know, Walls didn't do that much of it (having players pinch-hit in the ruck) during his coaching days. Whether it was just that coaches were less experimental back in the '80s and '90s (Walls coached Fitzroy, Carlton, Brisbane and Richmond from 1981-1989 and 1991-1997) I'm not sure, but the only "unorthadox" ruckmen (lets say, anyone under 193cm/6'4") he employed for any real length of time (averaged 3+ hitouts per game over a 10+ game period) during his coaching tenures were younger incarnations of Brisbane players Darryl White (189cm, 85kg), Matthew Kennedy (191cm, 98kg) and Dion Scott (190cm, 105kg). White was probably used in the ruck as much for his physical attributes (specifically, his magnificent leap) as it was to do with "getting him into the game". Their use might have been born out of pure necessity too, as genuine ruckmen were thin on the ground for Brisbane in the early '90s. White spent time in the ruck after Walls finished coaching in Brisbane, as well as in post-AFL play in the NTFL, so it wasn't just a Walls-centric coaching move.

....yeh the segue didn't work... i was trying to see who Wallsy would say it about in your team, like list style....

Well as I said earlier in the thread, at one point in the third quarter of the Sydney-Collingwood game, my mum said "I'm suprised Walls isn't calling for them to give Leon a run in the ruck", so he's probably one. He's called for Travis Cloke to "get a run in the ruck" at times this season too, so he's another. Guys like Ben Reid, Chris Dawes, Brent Macaffer, John Anthony, Alan Toovey and Nathan J. Brown ("He's a negating defender, but he's not getting enough footy for mine. Give him a run in the ruck") would probably be candidates in Wallsy's eyes too. He probably would have given Chris Egan (who incidentally had a great vertical leap and was built similarly to Darryl White) a run in the ruck given the chance too.

Give him a few minutes in the ruck!

**** me, you could make a drinking game out of it. Every player over 190cm who is out of form in the slightest needs to go in the ruck:

The hitlist:
- Hawkins
- T.Cloke
- L. Brown
- Dawes
- Koschitzke
- o'hAilpin
- Tippet
- Franklin
- Goodes

Except for Roughead. When was put in the ruck it was a big mistake, he said you don't want to put your key position forwards in the ruck. What a load.

Get your own material mate.

The thing that annoys me most about Walls commentary is that he thinks the solution to everything is to get a key forward into the ruck. If a team is struggling, get a key forward into the ruck:

"Geez, Big Bazza, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

"Geez, Big Kozi, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

"Geez, Big Richo, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

"Geez, Big Pav, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

"Geez, Big Browny, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

"Geez, Big Pav, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

"Geez, Big Goodesy, hasn't had a touch, get him into the ruck and give him a run around"

It's his solution to most things. Listen and you'll see.

Haha good thread, too true. This guy has lost it for sure this year. Used to actually be good.

Walls has never been good. A w***er of the highest order.

" i just think- long pause-, give him a run in the ruck, hes been - long pause -
Dissapointing(in long drawn out constipated tone)

Has anyone else noticed that he can't pronounce words that have a double t in the middle? Words like rattle/bottle/settle etc., he will will just drop the double t entirely out of the word. He's done it for years and I can't believe his employers haven't told him that as a broadcaster, he needs to at least try and speak correctly.

I heard he cant pronounce the 't' in Planetarium

Haha! Good one! :thumbsu:
But seriously, I feel abit sorry for Fraser..bet he just cant wait to be given his 200th game then retire already.

"Gee, big Fraser hasnt had a touch yet... give him a run in the ruck. O wait.."

To be honest I think Fraser's been a victim of circumstances at our club, but I'd hate to ruin the sentiment of this thread with a touch of honesty. :p

i don't mind fraser, but sheesh he's had a good 10 years to develop into a good ruckman. lot's of others do it on their own and he's had some very good midfielders to rove to him, should've done a lot better imho.
