Surely other than fitness it’s almost impossible to train physically to be an umpire, is it all tape watching?
Like goal umpires, how do they actually train to do the decision making?

Positioning, reading the play, how you get to the right spots on time (running patterns) are hugely important and all skills you need to develop.

Pretty sure a lot of them go to club trainings and umpire match sim, not 100% but I know it definitely happens in other sports.

Dunstall is highly intelligent. Rare for a footy player but they are out there. Roo was good at footy luckily enough for him.

Only joking. I'm with you. I don't see a white knight coming along to challenge the status quo. You either accept this is the way it is going to be or you hand in your membership, which my wife and I will be doing in 25.
