SEN's in trouble
Herald Sun Friday May 27

RADIO sports network SEN1116 is desperately fighting off closure.

In a statement released yesterday, SEN's management confirmed it was talking to several parties about its future.
"SEN management is confident the network will be able to continue to work through this period," it said. "No further comment will be made."

A series of crisis meetings were held on Wednesday to try to prevent the station's closure and revive it financially.

Speculation has been rife this week that receivers were about to be called in or that the station was seeking voluntary administration.

SEN has been struggling financially for several months. It recently downgraded the role of its star signing, Bruce McAvaney, and axed his three-hour program The Insiders.

Cordeaux tight-lipped on return
Adelaide Sunday Mail May 29

RADIO identity Jeremy Cordeaux says he has been fielding calls from "high-profile" members of South Australia's radio scene on the back of speculation about his and 5DN's comeback.

Cordeaux, who retired from 5DN before it was taken over by SEN last year, said many people had expressed interest in "coming across".

However, he would not comment on speculation he may return to the industry.

Melbourne-based SEN, Sports Entertainment Network, was last week seeking voluntary administration amid tumbling ratings and reported operating losses.

Cordeaux said the reaction proved there was strong interest in the return of a "revitalised" talk radio station.

"The speculation has led to a number of management and on-air personalities offering their support," he said.

"It gives me great encouragement that people want to go forward with a shake-up of the radio industry. It is encouraging, the possibility that a number of local fairly big-name personalities in talk radio want to come over to a revitalised 5DN."

Cordeaux said he was being contacted by people working both locally and interstate.

Crisis talks were reportedly held by SEN last week to try to halt the station's closure.

The Sunday Mail understands many contractors were still waiting on outstanding pay cheques from SEN.

SEN program director Peter Gowers said yesterday negotiations were ongoing and no decision had been made as yet.

He would not comment on the pay issue.

SEN, which leases the station's licence from owner Australian Radio Network, made its maiden broadcast in Adelaide in February with a line-up of sporting identities including Bruce McAvaney, former Crows captain Mark Bickley, Power ruckman Matthew Primus and John Kosmina.

In the last radio survey results SEN rated 1.4, compared with ABC 891 on 10.9 and 5AA at 17.3.

Let's talk radio, says Rob
The Advertiser Monday May 30

CHANNEL 10 personalities Corey Wingard and Rob Popplestone have been showing interest in the licence from the troubled SEN radio station.

Rumours began circulating on Thursday that the station was about to call in voluntary administrators.

SEN launched its 24-hour sport talkback format in Adelaide in February, taking over the former 5DN licence. Wingard and Popplestone had a popular talkback sports program before the 5DN takeover.

"We talked with the former 5DN management before SEN came to Adelaide and we'd love to talk with them again if the licence became available," Wingard says.

"We'd look at developing a very strong South Australian flavour with a leaning towards sport."

Re: The SEN Saga

It would take a miracle to save them. They are not going to get a lot of money to save them even in the short team.

I would be surprised if they are still going in 2006.

Re: The SEN Saga

Official announcement of SEN now being in administration today.
No idea of any other details in regards to what is going to happen on air etc.

Pacific Star leasee in administration
May 31, 2005 - 3:59PM

Melbourne radio station operator Pacific Star Network is "working to protect its interests" after a company to which it leases an AM licence went into administration.

Pacific Star said Sports Entertainment Network Pty Ltd had appointed Sal Algeri and Simon Wallace-Smith of Deloitte as voluntary administrators.

Pacific Star, formerly Data & Commerce, decided in 2003 to lease its loss making 3AK to Sports Entertainment instead of selling the 1116AM commercial licence to repay debt.

"The lease of the license commenced in January 2004 and was for an initial term of 3 years," Pacific Star said.

The current monthly lease payments are $83,333.33 excluding goods and services tax, it said.

Sports Entertainment is co-located with the Pacific Star's 3MP broadcasting facilities and is party to a shared services agreement.

As owner of the 1116AM broadcasting license, Pacific Star is required to comply with the Australian Broadcasting Authority's requirements of the license.

"The company will therefore work closely with the administrator to protect its interests and ensure the best possible outcome for its shareholders," it said.

The company's shares were placed in a trading halt on Monday, pending the announcement about Sports Entertainment Network.

They last traded at six cents.

And there is also this press release from Deloitte:
Sports Entertainment Network appoints Voluntary Administrators

Published: 31/5/05

Directors of Sports Entertainment Network Pty Ltd (SEN) have today appointed Sal Algeri and Simon Wallace-Smith of Deloitte as Voluntary Administrators.

SEN operates talkback sports radio stations in Melbourne (1116 am) and Adelaide (1323 am), employing high profile sporting identities and journalists as hosts. The private company employs approximately 50 staff.

Mr Algeri said SEN had been incurring losses since its launch in January 2004.

"We will conduct a thorough review of the company’s financial and trading position before determining the best course of action."

The administrators have taken control of the operations of SEN from today and will work with existing management to assess the company’s options going forward.

The outcome of the administrators’ review will be advised as soon as it is completed.

Re: The SEN Saga

you would think most of them are, there's no guarantee that they're going to get all the pay they're entitled too...

Re: The SEN Saga

Have you stopped broadcasting to Adelaide ?

KB has just announced the talkback number has changed to back to the old number (03)9429 1116

There never seems to be many Adelaide callers or is there, they just don't seem to say there are from there ?

Re: The SEN Saga

Yeah, I noticed that too.

They were using the same news as 3AW for a while, but then they got their own newsreaders.

Is this a sign on SEN going under ?

Re: The SEN Saga

Im afraid its looks like it will go back to melb :(

The prob with SEN over here is that we need a local morning show and/or drive home show to give us local news - with KB, Francis, Tony Sebecci(sp?????) and Mark Doran's show and the shows on the weekend giving us Interstate sporting news(somthing 5AA dosnt do)!

Also every other station in Adelaide has TV adds sprouting why the public should tune in whereas SEN hasnt done any publicity what so ever!!!!

Id hate to think id go back to 5AA cause they only care bout whats in our backyard - SEN is great for non crows/power and ppl who like other sports besides AFL and Cricket because thats all 5AA talk about!

We should get all our comments into one e-mail and send it in to SEN cause its a station that should be saved!!!!!!

We would like to express our desire to see SEN continue in both cities and would like to provide you with our thoughts as to how to ensure SEN's future as radio station for a niche market.

As an all sports station, you have birdged a gap in both cites which had been in existance for quite some time. Whilst all of the stations on the AM dial in Melbourne provided some coverage of sport and in particular the ABC provided live commentary etc on weekends. But the problem was in Melbourne was the fact that the only way sports fans could listen for sports news was to listen into news bulletins.

In Adelaide, SEN provided a breath of fresh air for no doubt a large number of sports fans by providing coverage to sports other than football and cricket. More specifcally, it allowed any element of bias to be some what eliminated. An example of this is 5AA talking about and presenting news only about Port Adelaide Power or the Adelaide Crows. With SEN primarily based in Melbourne, this has meant a much greater coverage of the AFL other than these two teams become available.

If SEN is dissolved, sports fan will have to revert back to listening to news bulletins for sports news. In South Australia and more specifcally in Adelaide, they will be treated by 5AA as if there is not football teams other than the Port or Crows,

SEN also means that oher sports such as football (soccer), netball and basketball got soem coverage as well as thier own shows where the sports is discussed as well analysed by people whose knowledge of the sport ratrher than just presenters who base what thety know on media releases and scores out of the newspaper.

Thanks for reading what we have to say.

Re: The SEN Saga

I was only asking questions about what we could do for content or e-mail or letter to SEN urging them not shut down.

As I said before. Just email the link. That way mgmt (if they care) can see that many people are concerned and not just one person.

I emailed them a previous thread link and got a response along the lines of thanks for your feedback etc.

Unfortunately it contained a couple of pages of 'talk' between yourself and another person which may have taken the edge off all the thoughtful comments from people like Pudding, JubJub etc who also genuinely care about SEN.

If its just one on one talk between yourself and another poster can you PM them instead. It gets a bit frustrating having to wade through that sort of stuff.

Not having a go, just some advice.
