It was actually 18,000 for AC/DC and a number of artists have pulled bigger crowds including one just before I was born in 1986 when Dire Straits played at KGV over two days and pulled 25,000 the first night and 17,000 the second night.
I can’t find any records for 25,000 or 18,000 but happy to stand corrected. 1986 is a long time ago and much has changed, namely ease of transport to Melbourne. Music festivals each year attract big numbers, quite different to a one night concert.

The business case said it will hold 30,000 in concert mode.
The business case states three international acts, each with a 30,000 crowd would be drawn to play at the venue. To put this into perspective, each year, the existing record would need to be broken three times by 5,000 people. Simply transporting an international act via the Spirit would be ambitious, let alone selling it out. The other option would be to crank up ticket prices, let economics do the talking and accept a more empty arena but few bands want that.

They have talked about it a lot on the Yes AFL team Yes stadium page. I fully agree transport costs make it less likely but maybe 2 or 3 concerts are possible.

Depending on scheduling with cricket (and possibly basketball), the former events professional in me thinks the stadium would be better used as a centrepiece for major festivals than trying to attract international acts.

I've said previously that one of the exciting prospects for me is creating a whole waterfront event when the Hurricanes are playing, kind of like an extension of the Taste - I think you could also do it when the Turbo Chooks are playing night games, and I think you could do it having music festivals as the centrepiece.

Not like alternative Party in the Paddock type festivals aimed at young people, but the kind of "festivals" you get at MONA, or at the Gorge in Launceston - a bit more of an adult contemporary vibe, and if you include 4-5 bands and surround it by food, wine and various other activations inside and outside the stadium, that's a cool day out, and I think it's a smart way to use the stadium as a centrepiece while also providing massive benefit to local businesses and the people who get food truck licenses for the events.

You don't need a stadium to create events like this, I believe Launceston has one on New Years Eve now. But I think the location is going to make it a great centrepiece for things like this.

Dark Mofo could make use of the space in an arts x sport crossover. Huge amounts of tourists in the state during Mofo - how do you get them out to sport? Or how do you make the stadium accessible to them? If Mofo married up with the bye round, that would just be handing the perfect opportunity to make something work. Even if it doesn't, the stadium has to look beyond sport, beyond even music to be viable. As Cox pointed out, GWS use their stadium for livestock at the show.

If you've got a stadium, you might as well make it a part of the community. If it's being used on average once a week per year, there have been bigger budgetary blowouts.

In terms of team names, the devils are nocturnal so again, make something of that.

All good ideas… I’ll be keeping an eye out for events roles with the stadium, it might be the one thing that would get me back to Tassie. I think - at least I hope - there’d be so many cool, creative opportunities to make use of it.

If the stadium has to go ahead, then yes, opportunism is the best pathway forward. Make the most, go big or bankrupt the state for good.

It’d crumble at the moment as there’s no way it could support the events. Someone will have fun with logistics to get those concerts in …

Doesn't fix the location issue, but has anyone here ever driven down Stanley St in Brisbane? You drive under the Gabba Southern grandstand. Bellerive's Hill isn't a problem...
Yeah. I’ve also tried to tried to drive over the Tasman Bridge on game day and been confronted with bumper-to-bumper traffic the whole way the Blundstone Arena (causing myself and thousands of others to miss the start of the game). There are just too many issues with that location, especially when you compare it to game day experiences at venues like Adelaide Oval or the G.

Does anyone else think the timing of the provisional listing of old goods shed is more than a coincidence?
It's come up at the time a contentious stadium is being considered for the area and after it had been knocked back for heritage listing on three other occasions (2008, 2013 and 2014).

I always laugh that we absolutely must preserve Victorian era buildings….Victorians themselves didn’t give a shit about what came before.

If we had minimal reminders of that ghastly era, the better.

That shed would already be matchwood if the Victorians were deciding

It obviously is. I don’t think many would have cared again if there wasn’t a stadium. Probably had political help launching the new bid. Which is legal and fine but it’s not coincidental.

Its only 108 years old so its not even Victorian era.

it is a old shed......

I am all for history but nothing of great significant in an old rail-yard shed, which has had a lot of work done to it over the years.

In before the HCC showcases that it was the place that once homed to Baby Jesus.

1915 is at the end of the Georgian era (England) & in the Federation period ( Australia).
That apart its just a shed. Actually its just a frame as the outside has colour bond cladding!
Geez we have houses around here a damn sight older than that shed!!

Is it an urban myth that the Aussie ‘heritage colours’ were just paint hey couldn’t sell in England so shipped it out?

Twist in Tassie stadium stumbling block after 109-year reveal

"A 109-year old shed that was looming as a major stumbling block in Tasmania’s plans to build a new stadium at Hobart’s Macquarie Point for a 19th club is unlikely to stand in the AFL’s way..."

I was never worried about this in the slightest, but at least we can check it off the long list of things that might potentially get in the way of the stadium.
The stadium opponents are really clutching at straws and the media is building hysteria by putting a spotlight on nonsense like this. It has got to the stage that I generally don’t care what the media report on this anymore, it’s irrelevant, because all that matters is the planning commission’s assessment and the vote at the end of the POSS process.

If the POSS determines it’s the best option for the state (all of the prior studies determined it was) then it will be approved. As much as politicians like to play games, I don’t believe a majority will reject the project out of spite if they can see it’s a net benefit for the state (except perhaps for the Greens, Tucker and Alexander).

Even if it’s rejected, Dean Coleman’s team still working behind the scenes to address some of the government’s concerns for the 2.0 project. Having a viable alternative in the background is key. One way or another, this thing will get built.
