Notable stats today:

• Jude had 9 clearances to follow up his 11 last week.
• 16-30 Free Kick count is the biggest differential this season and puts us back in the negative for the season
• Kept Port to just 31 Inside 50s, the lowest of all our opponents this season. (Previous best was 44 in Rounds 2 and 4)
• Disposal efficiency improved markedly at 74.8% after dropping to below 70% in the past 3 rounds (and a season low 62.0% last week)
• Season high Kick-to-handball ratio of 1.58 (Previous best was 1.47 last week)
• Won the Marks Inside 50 stat (by 9 to 8) for the first time in 6 weeks.
• Port had an incredible 69 1%'s, easily eclipsing the average of 38.8 that the Swans's opponents have had this year. The Swans had 50 1%'s, their second highest for the year.
• Not only did the Swans have a good spread of 9 goalkickers (which the commentators seemed to emphasise continuously all night), they had also had a good spread of 9 players with an assist.

Good sign that in the game in which we had our highest kick to handball ratio, we had a very solid disposal efficiency. Suggests a much greater number of effective kicks.

Some bad stats this round, not surprisingly considering how well beaten we were:

• Conceded 63 inside 50s, the 2nd most for the season.
• Contested marks 6-16, easily the worst of the season. In the same vein, marks inside 50 were a lopsided 5-17 also the greatest discrepancy of the year. No wonder so many of our goals were scrappy, we hardly had any set shots.
• We were outhustled 45-69 in the one-percenters, and 56-75 in the tackles. We're consistently getting outtackled, losing this category in 9 of the 13 rounds.
• Conceded 29 bounces, the 2nd most of the season. O'Brien ran riot with 8 bounces (Who was meant to be on him?)
• K:H ratio dropped to 1.23 after last week's season high.
• Malceski had 10 rebound 50s, equalling his season high.
• Goodes retains his lead in the clangers category, with 6 this round. Not surprisingly, he had the game low disposal efficiency of just 38%
• Kirk's reputation as the tackle king seems to be slipping fast, he had just 1 last night and is now trailing both Jack and Jude.

• Incredible number of contested marks today our 16 vs their 17. Season average before today was 9 v 10.
• Marks inside 50 picked up, as noted in the TV commentary. Was averaging 7.7 in the past 7 weeks before picking up 18 today. Goodes with 4 and TDL with 3 led the way.
• Only 42 inside 50s today, highlighting the difficulty we're having transitioning from half back to half forward.
• Lost the clearances 33-38, the first time in 4 rounds.
• Richmond easily beat the season high for opposition disposal efficiency at 77%
• TDL's nerves affected him before he started to settle. His first 5 disposals were all classed as ineffective. He finished with 2 effective and 6 ineffective touches.
• Jude led the way with 9 clearances but the next highest midfielder had only 3 - ROK, Hanners and McVeigh

• Incredible disposal difference of 147 (432 to 285). However, despite this we lost the clearances 31 - 39. Also the I50 differential was also quite small (52 to 50)
• Another solid week in the marks inside 50 stat (13 to 5). 10 players had at least one mark inside 50.
• Kirk moves back on top of the tackles list, after accumulating 13.
• Not the best day for ROK, having 8 clangers listed against his name of which 5 were FAs
• All 7 of Pyke's possessions were deemed to be efficient, moving him to 4th overall in the season. (78.9%)
• None of Meredith's possessions were contested.
• Despite having a good game overall, Goodes's disposal efficiency continue to be poor - just 52% this round dragging his season efficiency to 59.4%, the 3rd worst of the Swans to play 7 or more games. He is just ahead of Jetta (59.2%) and Bradshaw (58.8%)
• Richards had more contested marks (3) than uncontested marks (2)
• Hannebery had another 10 contested possessions, pushing him up to 5th in the averages behind renowned tough nuts Jude, Mummy, Jack and Kennedy.

1. Marks inside 50 again was a good pointer to a victory 17-10. The surprise packet was Rhyce Shaw with 5, tied with Goodes and McGlynn for the season as the highest for someone not named Bradshaw
2. Very efficient going forward - 16 goals from just 45 inside 50 entries - the most efficient of the season
3. Season low 1%'s - 25. This is probably due to the fact the defenders didn't have too many spoils to make. LRT's absence (he is the runaway leader in this category) was also telling
4. Jack's 13 tackles takes him to top of the Swans tacklers list, bypassing perennial leaders Jude and Kirk.
5. Speaking of Kizza, he had a great game statistically. In addition to the 13 tackles, he had 6 clearances, 5 inside 50s and 4 assists. Let's just conveniently overlook the 9 clangers (4 of which were Frees Against)

Just quickly on Jack, looking at his DE% and clangers in tandem, 5 of his clangers were disposal-clangers, and he had a DE% of 78%, from 23 touches. That means he had 18 effective disposals. Which in turn means that his 5 disposal clangers were his only ineffective disposals, and the rest of his touches were effective, which is far better than 2 clangers and 10 ineffective touches or something like that.

• Stats do lie - we won the clearances 40-32 and had a effective disposal rate 75% to 72%
• The clanger count was a whopping 50-37. McGlynn led the way with 7
• Midfield still struggling to contain the opposition. We conceded 57 Inside 50s, the 3rd week in a row the count was over 50.
• First time this year the kick to handball ratio dipped below 1 (0.99). In contrast the Dees had a k:h ratio of 1.62, which was noted by the TV commentators as being greater than their usual numbers.
• Smashed in the contested possession numbers 114-139, the 2nd greatest negative differential. Our game against Geelong was the greatest discrepancy (26)
• Melbourne scored 22 goals from 57 inside 50 entries, the most efficient goal conversion accuracy of all our opponents this season.

• Outtackled again 62-76, the 12th time in 18 rounds.
• Contested marks wasn't even close 7-17
• How good were the cats? 312 effective disposals (#1 for our opposition this year), 77% efficiency (#1 by 3%) 20.2 disposals per goal (#2 behind Melbourne last week) 30.9% contested possession rate (2nd lowest - explanation would be they moved it so well and so quickly the Swans were in no position to contest it). Supercoach differential 1393-1907 the 2nd highest discrepancy against the Swans. You guessed it Geelong were #1 in the Kardinia Park game 1395-1908.
• If only we had two of him, Goodes had 3 assists to go along with his 3 goals 3 behinds.
• ROK led the clearances with 5, McGlynn and Jack 4 each.
• 11 1% percenters for Richards, most of them would be spoils.

• I noticed Jack was on 124 SC points at half time which is just off the charts. He finished with 'only' 176 SC points. 9 clearances, 5 assists, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal and 5 tackles. Superb.
• Goodes has re-discovered his timing and finished with 5 contested marks. He's still the clear leader in clangers, credited with 7 yesterday.
• A lot was made of McGlynn's efforts against his old club yesterday (3 goals), but let's not forget the other ex-Hawk. Joey Kennedy had a game high 15 contested possies (equal with Jack), 6 clearances at 90% efficiency.
• Jetta had no bounces yesterday!
• Both sides had high disposal efficiency rates (80% vs 78%). It was clearly our highest rate for the season.
• Tackles were low on both sides (and we lost this count yet again) and this could be attributed to the high efficiency rates meaning there were less opportunities to completed effective tackles.
• Kick-to-handball ratio of 1.29 after 3 of the past 4 weeks having a ratio of close to 1.00.
• Beat them in the contested possessions 126-97, the differential of 29 being the 2nd biggest this year thus far.

I know it is a somewhat flawed stat, but still that is bloody impressive.

• Smashed them in clearances 40-28. McVeigh, Kennedy, Goodes with 6 each.
• Smashed them in inside 50's 55-32. The differential of 23 is the greatest for the year. Jack had 8, Jetta 6, Malceski 5
• 4 assists for the Gopher to go along with his 3 goals. Add 3 marks inside 50, and 4 inside 50s and he was well on his way to BOG honours before his untimely exit.
• Fremantle only had 94 contested possessions, a new low for our opposition beating last week's 97. Mumford had a game high 13 contested possessions and Hanners had 10.
• Marks inside 50 were well into double digits for the 7th week in a row, eclipsing the streak of 6 that occurred in the first 6 weeks of the year. I've already mentioned McGlynn's 3 but it's surprising that Bevan equalled him with 3 as well.
• A season low 16 rebound 50s, partly a reflection of the tiny amount of inside 50s that Fremantle had, but also a reflection of how efficient they were at converting inside 50s into a score. They goaled from 40.6% of the times they entered the forward 50, second only to Geelong (41.7%) two weeks ago in the ranking of our opposition in this stat.
• Freo had 28 bounces, led by Broughton and Roberton with 9 each. We only had 10 in total, Jetta 3 and Shaw 2. They definitely play the ground very well, and were very dangerous when breaking from defence. It was a good thing we starved them of a lot of ball.
• Jetta nearly doubled his goalkicking accuracy for the year (5% to 9.1%!)
• Not an official stat, but I counted Freo kicking a goal from at least 4 stoppages inside their forward 50. An amazing stat considering how well they were beaten in clearances around the ground.

• Won clearances (45-34) for the 6th week in a row, very impressive against the top side in this statistic.
• Starved the Bulldogs of the ball, restricting them to just 256 disposals, the lowest opposition total of the year.
• Plenty of contested marks in the game (16-14), Goodes and surprisingly Shaw led with 3 each.
• Dominated the contested possession count (131-109) and amazingly 6 Swans had 9 (Hanners, Goodes, Teddy, Jack, Jude, Kennedy)
• Grundy had 6 bounces, a team high. He had only 10 for the year before the game.
• I thought Mattner was fantastic in defence yesterday, and this was backed up by 7 1%'s
• Bulldogs disposal efficiency was terrible, just 66% compared to our 75%. They found it hard to get many uncontested possessions as shown up in a high contested possession rate of 42%
• Jack's average over his 3-week purple patch: 26 disposals (11 contested) 3 marks 7.3 clearances 5.3 tackles 1.3 goals 6.7 inside 50s and 2 assists

Yeah, it's a bit odd that they used exactly the same stat categories that you did. On your next one I'd at least be putting in a false figure or 2 to see if they're at least doing some of their own homework.

• I posted last week that Jack had been averaging over the past 3 weeks 26 disposals (11 contested) 3 marks 7.3 clearances 5.3 tackles 1.3 goals 6.7 inside 50s and 2 assists - this week he had 26 disposals (10 contested) 4 marks 7 clearances 6 tackles 3 goals 4 inside 50s and 2 assists. Talk about consistency!
• TDL took 5 marks inside 50, taking his season tally to 17 in just 6 games. In contrast, Jesse White has 16 in 19 games. He's also fantastic in his goalkicking accuracy 14.5 @ 73.7%
• Richards was very good with his disposal, of his touches, 22 were effective.
• Bevan was also very good with the ball in hand, finishing with a team-high 3 assists.
• 4th game in a row that Jetta has kicked a goal, and a career high 5 clearances.
• It should have come as no surprise that we won the free kick count, Brisbane are the worst team in the competition for free kick differential.
• Brisbane couldn't hit the side of a barn door - their 56 clangers and 67% disposal efficiency are among the worst the Swans have come across this year.

• 21 assists, of which Moore had 4.

• A season high 62 1-percenters, easily eclipsing the previous high of 52 in Round 9. Richards and Mattner led the way with 9 and Tadhg had 8.
• Only 8 marks inside 50 today, dropping to single figures for the first time since Round 13.
• Pyke had 6 Inside 50s today! Equal team-high with McVeigh and Kennedy
• Lost the Contested Possession count 146-156. In our little 4 week winning streak, we won this stat by an average of 124-101.

 

[Riders of Rohan]

A vital stat that many people haven't noticed about the Sydney Swans is that we have won the most last quarters in the competition. Beating Collingwood, Geelong, The Saints etc.. I found this interesting as many regard Carlton as being the fastest finishing side in the comp, yet we have won more. Many Carlton supporters and outsiders expected that if they were winning or slightly losing by three quarter time they would win in a landslide. Interesting.... Very.. Very Interesting IMO
