I see however the player can't play for 12 days if subbed off injured or concussed. I guess that leaves the gaming to situations where the side has a bye the next week, or the player subbed off is stinking so bad they will not be picked the next week anyway.

So unable to continue isn’t limited to a concussion?

Someone who does a minor two week injury can now be subbed off?

Makes sense when you consider they are reducing interchanges and therefore it would have a decent impact on the game if you lost one of those rotations say in the first few minutes of the game.

Apparently clubs were briefed at 11am that the 23rd player is back. Apparently can only be used if a Dr rules a player unable to continue. I say it will be used tactically and will be impossible to police.
A advantage for a non traveling interstate club.
So do we take a couple emergencies interstate?
Who in turn don't get game time.

The 12 days only appears to be if the injury is concussion. This will definitely be open to exploitation!

I can see a sudden increase in rolled ankles being reported across the competition.

The new rule will allow clubs to replace an injured player with a “23rd man” — a previously-selected squad member not in the team’s starting 22.

An injury substitution will be possible if a club doctor rules a player out for the remainder of a match.

The club doctor can only sub out a player if he believes the injury will sideline him for at least 12 days.

If that player is concussed, they will be forced to sit out for the next 12 days. However, if it is for a different injury, then that player must be assessed and cleared by the AFL chief medical officer to be eligible to play the following round.

And they don’t even deny it will be exploited! [emoji23]

When asked on Wednesday how confident he was that clubs wouldn’t manipulate the new rule, McLachlan responded: “Well, that’s part of the contest isn’t it? I think we’re all realistic to know that once a stake goes in the ground everyone looks at it from different angles. It’s about health and safety.”

If the phrase of last year was “we’ll be flexible and follow the health and safety advice”, then the phrase of this year will be, “the injury wasn’t as bad as first thought.”

Player X tweaks his hammy. He knows it is a minimum 3 weeker. Five minutes later he Head Butts a goals post and is subbed out. Personally I want the Dons and Pratts medico bench supervised by an independent quack.

Doesn’t need to headbutt the post. The sub rule appears to covers any injury incurred by any player and can be taken at the clubs discretion.

A concussion has an automatic 12 day minimum rest but any other player could play the following week if assessed by the AFL and given the all clear.

Clubs will be stupid not to pull a sore player at 3qtr time (his calf was a bit stiff), in fact I’d go as far to as to say based on my reading of it that the AFL are more than aware of this and the rules have been set as such to actively encourage it.

Unbelievable.
The AFL schedule a coaches (online) meeting at 5am WA time, Damien Hardwick and Luke Beveridge are absent (along with Longmuir & Simpson).
Clarko (according to Barrett) goes off on a rant and the AFL brings in a new rule a couple of days before the start of the season, despite Hocking stating previously the AFL wouldn't introduce new rules post the Christmas period.
And apparently the AFL didn't speak to club CEOs or football managers before introducing the rule.

Amateurs in everything but pay package.
And once again what Clarko wants Clarko gets.

Damien Barrett's take;

I like it.
Let's be honest.
The swans 23rd man will likely be James Bell.

How anyone can view that as a advantage.....

By the time you've at 23 you're looking at utility jobbers.

Yeah well tell that to the Crows when we bring on one Lance Buddy Franklin at half time next week!

Don't they have to produce evidence the injury was serious enough to miss at least a week (and further evidence to prove they recovered quicker) to independent AFL doctors and risk losing points and draft picks if found to be trying to rort the system.

Was probably the original time when Clarko would have coffee with Gil. Considering they talk about new rules there why not just repurpose the meeting to the rest of the group......

Slipped in the end of a trade article

HOW TO PAY THE SUBS?
Clubs will not have to include the match payment for a medical substitute within their salary cap after the AFL rushed in the rule just a day before the season begun.

But they will still have to pay the players their money outside of the total play payments model. It means some could consider using players who are on based contracts – such as a flat $300,000 annual income – as their medical sub rather than players who are on match payments to avoid having to pay the extra money.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, first and second-year players and rookies receive match payments of around $4000-5000 a game. Across the competition and season it could cost the clubs a total of around $2.5 million.

Any incentives triggered by the medical substitute won't be included within the club's salary cap.

However clubs are mindful that players may reach their triggers for a new contract through being the medical substitute, with many around the competition having games played triggers built into their deals that sees them automatically tick over for another year at their respective club. - Callum Twomey

I don't disagree with the sub as long as its an extra player rather than 21+1.

Great suggestion I saw is that if a player is subbed off using this new rule they are required to miss the next week to try to prevent exploitation.

Also, a sub that doesn't get played getting a game added to their career totals is just nonsense. We don't count DNP's in other sports if they sit on the bench the whole game.
