And we're down to 2...... (and Smith)

Shola Ameobi fears his latest injury setback 'does not look good' after being forced off in Newcastle United's defeat at Arsenal.

The striker, who missed a large chunk of last season with a hip problem, suffered a groin injury in the 2-0 defeat at Emirates Stadium.

Ameobi was looking to make an impact in the first team, but is now waiting to learn how serious his latest setback will be.

"I had to come off because I did something to my groin, which doesn't look good," Ameobi told the Evening Chronicle.

"I want to get back in the team and start playing as a regular.

"Injuries keeping me out isn't good for me, but this is the luck we are having at the moment. It makes it more frustrating that I had almost a season out last year and that I am struggling to get into the team.

"That's frustrating. I know what it is like to miss three or four games and then come back in is very difficult.

"I have always said that I need to play this season. I now have to get back, get fully fit and show what I can do.

"I will see how it goes in the next 48 hours. Maybe I will get some good news if it turns out it isn't as bad."

Martins and Viduka is probably the best combo anyway.

90 minutes for the both of them. :thumbsu:

Obviously it hurts depth and squad options but when you have two first choice strikers of such quality things should turn out alright. :thumbsu:

Ameobi's injured is he?

How long before his physio room buddy N'Zogbia joins him?
I've been long a fan of Charles N'Z but his only restriction so far has been injuries. Now in the form of his career playing well enough to get a NT team call up (is he French NT eligible) the worst thing to happen would be another injury.
Hopefully an injury free run for the season and IF that happens? Watch out Radioactive Teams!!

Zoggy would be a French national N/T. Played his only two games for the French Under 21s earlier on this month, so I think the senior team might still be a little way off for him, but who knows if he keeps his current form up.

I agree about Viduka and Smith being our best two up front, and we also have Alan Smith who can play striker so its not a huge deal.

As a back-up option to Malouda as a left WINGER.

Not helping his chances at the moment is where he's playing.

Obviously he's in ridiculously excellent form but with the likes of Abidal, Evra and Clichy all LB contenders, one would imagine it will be pretty difficult to break into the team in that area.

We haven't really had many other options atm though.

He's still a very capable left back, and with Enrique not being fully fit, he's had to be playing there.

Now that Enrique is match fit, I'd expect him to slot into the left back role and Zogs to push up a bit.

VS.

Rolando Bianchi is out of Manchester City's home encounter with Newcastle.

The £8.8million Italian striker aggravated a groin injury during Tuesday's Carling Cup triumph over Norwich and is not due to return to training until next week.

Emile Mpenza should return as City's lone forward, meaning Georgios Samaras will probably have to content himself with a place on the bench at best despite his match-winning efforts against the Canaries.

Mark Viduka is expected to return from a foot injury to partner Obafemi Martins in Newcastle's attack.

Viduka missed the Magpies' 2-0 defeat in the Carling Cup to Arsenal but should be back against City.

Sam Allardyce's options up front are limited with groin injuries ruling out Michael Owen and making Shola Ameobi very doubtful.

Defender Claudio Cacapa, who also has a groin injury, is also unlikely to be fit.

Teams

Manchester City (from): Schmeichel, Hart, Corluka, Onuoha, Sun, Dunne, Richards, Garrido, Ball, Geovanni, Dabo, Fernandes, Hamann, Johnson, Ireland, Petrov, Elano, Samaras, Mpenza, Etuhu.

Newcastle (from): Harper, Given, N'Zogbia, Rozehnal, Taylor, Enrique, Faye, Edgar, Beye, Milner, Geremi, Butt, Smith, Pattison, Viduka, Martins, Ameobi.

City looked unbeatable today, just amazing.

We lacked a bit of bite in midfield, Smith looks like a dead duck out there, the new Bowyer, can't wait until Barton replaces him.

We looked slick in parts, and give the foreign signings another month or so to gel and things will be all right. It is a very long season.

Smith was a dead duck??

Wait, did you just say that?

Talk about an easy scapegoat.

He was one of our better players today.

Runs around a lot but not a whole lot of end product. I'm a big fan of him, but, he is better up front, though we have better options in Viduka and Martins, he can't play out wide, and Barton is a better choice in the middle.

Its people like you I really hate.

Have you even bothered to see how good Man City have been? I'll tell you right here and now not many teams will go there and win.

But I guess, unless we win every game we're crap...... right??
Hate?? fair enough.

Man City are good, very good today,
We are slow and old. Nicky Butt is useless, Alan Smith is a toughman wannabee,
Milner is too hungry for his ability.

I'm not looking to win every game, but i'm sick and tired of winning one here, dropping away from home there and its ok cos they were better than us on the day, blah blah blah

but if you are happy with mediocricy then hate away.

Alan Smith had a fantastic game IMO, i think becozz the game was fairly open and i think he excells in them type of matches...in general i felt we were poor in second half and defensively caught out numourous times...

Elano and Petrov has their best games for Man City so that could be an excuse and no team can beat them if they are playing like that week in week out...

i think we deserved a point or another goal...

a) We have 6/7 players out that would make a difference.

b) I didnt think we played too badly, but when a team is better than you on the day what can you do?

c) Nicky Butt is far from useless

d) Milner has been disappointing this season

e) Winning one game and then losing a game is par for the course in the premier league these days, such is the evenness of the competition. The only exceptions to this rule are obviously the big 4.

f) I don't hate you ;)

All of the above are facts.

The only performance I have been majorly disappointed with this season is the Derby game for obvious reasons.

Alan Smith had a fantastic game IMO as well.

Defensively we were poor today, and thats the only complaint I have from our game. Steven Taylor had a game he'd much rather forget.

If Man City play like that week in week out, they'll finish top 4.

Exactly, but you have to ask, how the f*** has Sven got them to play so well in such little time...bloddy amazes me!!

Steven Taylor will bounce back after his performance...i just hope we play well against Everton who is another club in the 4-7th bracket...

i agree somewhat, but we can't rely on Owen cos he never plays, If Duff puts in another season as he did last year then i may as well play. And Barton will spend 1/3 of his games out suspended. Ameobi isn't in our best side.

b) I didnt think we played too badly, but when a team is better than you on the day what can you do?

I think we were totally outplayed on the field and out played tactically.

c) Nicky Butt is far from useless

He wasn't for Man UTD, he has been for us.

d) Milner has been disappointing this season

you are being nice

e) Winning one game and then losing a game is par for the course in the premier league these days, such is the evenness of the competition. The only exceptions to this rule are obviously the big 4.

With what we have we should be up there (5-7)

f) I don't hate you ;)

I feel the love

I understand that we have been decimated by injuries (again) and that while we haven't been winning all, we haven't been losing, maybe my expectations for this year is a little higher than a few of you guys here.

Furst thoughts on the game where....

A. Why did BSA take Geremi off?? he was playing his best game of the season and was actually the only creative midfielder for us, as soon as he was gone we looked unorganised going forward.

B. We are terribly slow all over the park, Beye shows a bit of toe and Zoggy and Martins are the other 2 but apart from those 3 we look a yard slower than most. Rozehnal makes up for his lack of pace with simple smarts but Butt,Smith,Geremi,Taylor etc are a fair way of the mark.

I thought the game was their for both sides to win, we had a couple of really good chances, I mean that header from Martins should have been in the back of the net, it was a free unmarkerd attempt on goal the dude blew it, apart from that he was as lively as ever, in saying that if it wasnt for Shay Given we would have had 4 or 5 past us.

Anyone else agree its time for BSA to make some changes, everyone has been harping on this since the start of the campaign but we need some creativity through the midfield. Emre needs to play, Barton as soon as his ready needs to play and perhaps throw Geremi to RB and have Zoggy and Milner on the wings or have Geremi with Emre and keep Beye at RB, either way we need something exciting going forward.

Viduka was awesome I thought, I dont think their is a more unselfish forward in the league, his strength, first touch and hold up play is 2nd to none, been a great purchase.

Agreed on A, he should've taken Nicky Butt off.

We're probably lacking a bit of pace, but Steven Taylor isn't that slow. He got skinned by Petrov but that just shows how quick Petrov is, because Taylor is no slouch.

I wouldn't be throwing Geremi to right back, because this means that Habib Beye will miss out on a spot and he has been sensational for us to date. Maybe push him to right wing and play Barton and Butt (I know he gets a lot fo stick, but a lot of it is unwarranted IMO, he didn't have the best of games on Saturday but before that he had been v. good) in the middle. Zoggy on the left and James Milner (who has been rather disappointing this year) will have to be happy with a bench place.

I'd start with something like: (assuming all are fit)

Given
Beye - Rozehnal - Cacapa - Enrique
Geremi - Butt - Barton - N'Zogbia
Viduka - Martins

Harper, Emre/Milner, Smith, Owen, Taylor

IMO that is our strongest team.

We copped the first goal from Beye because he stopped running...if he can get a hand on a replay you can see that he slows down when Ireland has the ball and then realies the threat at the back post when Ireland squared it in...

IMO Beye should have been there way before Ireland squared the cross...

Duffer?

A fit DD can play on the right. And well.

Whether a fit and firing DD exists anymore is for the individual to decide.

Not to mention he makes your team look much stronger. Certainy moreso than a midfield trio of Geremi, Butt and Barton.

You know, I actually forgot about Duff, thats how injury prone he is.

Will he even play this year? I'm not so sure, he's bound to pick up another injury when he gets back.
