Following Occam's razor, simplest explanation is usually the correct one, so I'm going to go with some journalist making up bullsh*t to build a story which will sell papers heading into the transfer window. FSG aren't stupid, under no circumstances would selling Suarez be either a good business or footballing decision in our present position.

How can you say that? If you sell him for £200bn it would certainly be a good business and footballing decision.

As it is, you apparently don't have a lot of money to improve a squad that desperately needs improvement. You don't have a lot of saleable assets, and he is the most saleable one you have. I doubt he'll be sold yet as I don't think there are clubs with the sort of money needed to buy him that would be interested in an expensive January auction.

Within reason. I'm working on the basis that no club is going to offer more than £40-50m. Under that condition he's worth more to us alive than dead. His presence in our team is not only the one thing that's going to act as the driving force to take us back up the table into a more profitable league position, he's also the sort of world class player who will increase the appeal of our club to any potential signings. We lose him, our appeal goes down, we struggle even more to bring in quality players and in all likelihood will have to pay those players of interest even more to convince them to sign.

We're in a very delicate stage of our rebuilding process at the moment and selling him would set us back even further.

As much as I wish we were, we're not in City's position in that you can essentially take your pick of any number of world class players who would be willing to sign for your club at the moment. The harsh reality is that even if we had the money, there aren't many £20m or £30m players who would be willing to sign for Liverpool in our current position, and for that reason it's imperative that we hold onto the few world class players we do have until we're in a position to attract those sorts of players again. Then perhaps Suarez would become a sellable asset (at the right price).

Could be wrong but Im fairly sure Suarez arrived before Torres was sold and the Torres $$ was used to purchase Carroll. Your point still stands though.

Buying players is allowed under FFP.

Lets use a random player signed on a five year deal for £40m and £150k a week.

Impact on FFP is only £15m a year. But to buy a forward we're going to sell a forward so that lessens the impact even further.

Cesc, Nasri and RVP (like Torres) all implicitly said they wanted to leave in the weeks/months leading up to their respective departures so it became pointless trying to hold onto them as their value would only depreciate further, Suarez hasn't. Quite the opposite in fact, he's been adamant that he isn't going anywhere and is happy at Liverpool.

If i remember correctly, RVP made a statment that he's future was with Arsenal and that he loved the club, the fans and wanted to stay there to achieve great things.

4th July 2012 he announced he wouldn't be signing a new contract with Arsenal due to their "lack of ambition", is that the statement you were referring to? I can't find any positive quotes from him after that apart from a few stories reporting rumours that he may have had a change of heart and wanted to stay, but nothing directly from him.

Could be right (they transferred on the same day but from memory the Suarez deal was pretty much done for a while before that).

My recollection at the time was of discussions on here that Suarez was being brought in to partner Torres, while a lot were thinking he was being bought in as a replacement for soon to be outgoing Torres.

I always thought of Carroll as the Torres replacement as Torres' move to Chelsea depended on Carroll coming in (we didn't officially sanction the Torres deal until Carroll was in the door) whereas Suarez's signing was conducted as a separate deal to partner one of the other 2.

I'm sure Suarez will eventually leave (as do most players from most clubs), but it won't be in January. It was a different set of circumstances with Torres, despite that very forced statement it was well known that he was unhappy and he was basically told to keep quiet and stay at the club while the sale went through to maximize the value of the club. It was inevitable that he would hand in a transfer request at the first opportunity so I don't think it's fair to use him in a comparison with Suarez who hasn't shown anything like the sulking and much documented 'poor body language' Torres showed in his last few months at the club.
