That is really interesting. I never even knew lace-ups were worn in the eighties. I suppose this shows my young age. But this is really, really perplexing. Were they made the same material as the regular ones?

When was the lace-up almost replaced by the now regular jumper? And who, and when, was the last player to wear a lace-up in the VFL/AFL?

Maybe we'll see these images do the rounds. That last photo of the all-yellow peril strip has been the sole representative for years. It is nice to have some complimentary sources.

I'd previously heard that 1986 was about the last a lace-up was worn, BUT it's obvious they were around in 1987. I'd heard they were banned because a player broke a finger pretty badly when tackling someone and his finger got caught in the laces.

I'm going to venture that by the end of 1988, all lace-ups were gone - we saw four clubs launch new logos in 1989, maybe as part of Sekem "relaunching" footy gear for a new era. (My brother had a Richmond Sweathog top from 1989, first year I can recall footy-branded street wear - would have been a broad marketing strategy.)
Other alternative: no more lace-ups when the league converted to AFL in 1990.

That really is bizzare. Similarly, would never have thought that any lace-up eagles guernseys would have existed. Where's Mero when you need him? :p
On the yellow shorts note, I actually don't think they look that bad. I also am of the belief that in the current baggier style and polyester material they would also look much better. Whilst its only hypothetical at this stage, I actually think a yellow peril style clash guernsey would look better with yellow shorts than white. Obviously blue shorts wouldn't work as they would make one of those awkward 'half-dark, half-light' combinations

I don't really find white shorts that bad. Their purpose is to signify who's the away team and to prevent a little bit of a clash. Sure, yellow shorts would look better, but I don't really fuss over shorts TBH.

No, white shorts are fine in most cases. Just don't go the best with yellow imo, that's all.

Agree with PAFC on the yellow shorts thing. With today's modern material I reckon they'd look great with a yellow peril jumper.

Also, great work Mr. Eagle! Hard to believe they were still wearing lace-ups then.

Pretty sure it was Robbie Flower.

The AFL 1990 point is a good one. I doubt they would have made any with the AFL logo on it.

I remember going through some of my dad's old footy records a while back and it looks like lace ups were still reasonably common in 1987. I think I saw both Ablett and Lindner wearing them for Geelong and there were a few Footscray players who wore them. Wouldn't have expected an Eagles player to be wearing one though. Obviously, by that stage, it had to be a personal preference.

Ross Glendenning frequently wore one while he was at North.

Got a feeling one other Eagles player wore the lace up at some stage too. Wrenstead maybe?

What I found interesting then, and even more interesting now that they actually use them, was the smaller wings on the lace up.

No, Mr E.

If I were outside more, I would be rained upon. Which makes no sense at all.

Yeah picked up up one today for a training guernsey for next year asked if they had any away guernseys left for that price but they said they sold out a while ago in the regular sizes S,M,L. Glad to get a guernsey that cheap but would of rathered ro get the away design. I hope the club relises how well the Royal and Yellow Peril wings sell and scrap the home and clash for 2013

Robert Flower broke his finger against North in R2 1987.
He missed 4 games with the injury.
At the end of 87 the VFL banned them.

My dad was working at Essendon at the time.
They threw away (YES, threw away) their lace-up jumpers, which were then taken by the trainers and staff who happened to be present at the time.
At the same time the senior jumpers were all collected so they could put bigger NUBRIK logos on them.
Interesting thing about the lace-ups, they only ever got one, so those that wore them in the 1984 & 85 Grand Finals were the ones chucked out.
My dad got Van der Haar's out of the drawing of straws and it's now been returned to Paul Van der Haar, but only in the last 5 years.
Prior to that it hung at the top of my mate's parent's stair case for years.

I had never seen Glendinning's lace-up before the pics on the previous page.
Had I been asked before today, I would have said I doubted its existence.

Are you going to put the lace-up yellow peril on your site, Mero?

Maybe combine it with the 1987 yellow peril and have a little note saying something along the lines of "sometimes worn as a lace-up".
Surely a majority of pre-1988 jumpers had a lace-up variant? Surely it's exhausting (and cluttering) putting the disclaimer on all those jumpers.

No. More a derivative of the regular jumper.
Just like Jason McCartney's 88/202 jumper for the Bali bombings.
It was never the team jumper.

At one stage i thought Richmond had more players in lace-ups for the 1980 season, but it turned out to be about 10 or 12, so I never changed that one either, and that was the most of any team.
