How has Aiden Bonar been going this year? With all your injuries I thought he might have got a gig already.
It seems his progress is being managed. His physical development has been delayed by injury compared ro most of his age group. Definitely more talent than some we've played, but guys like Dylan Buckley are mature and have time in the system.
Nick Shipley may be the next mid we choose but both are AFL mids.
His form has dropped a bit last couple of NEAFL games which just might indicate he needs the next challenge though. Team fitness could be an issue too. Hard to go in planning limited game time to an AFL game, particularly if you got guys like Lobb and Kelly who have been green recently.

Shipley a bit stiffed by the coach IMHO - thought he played pretty well in the contest, and to come up with 22 tackles but not in best 6?

So, who's in line for a first grade callup - opinions? Presuming that Rory is OK, Cogs returns, but Dan Lloyd is out, is that a straight swap Cogs/Lloyd and otherwise keep a winning team intact, or is it an opportunity to reward - for example - Brent Daniels with a run in firsts? In that case, probably Perryman makes way and Griff or MdB operate from the HBF.

Solid contributions from most of the listed players which is pleasing although would like to see where they are getting the touches and Kennedy was massive in his comeback game
Good to see Buntine and TOJ getting good numbers and they will be pushing for a return in the back half of the year but I think they need to keep up the form and pressure those ahead of them. Interesting to see who will be in line for selection as some returning players over the weeks after the bye but I wouldn't mind seeing Cumming have another run for the Brisbane game although not huge numbers he has been consistent and another game with the opportunity for an even match up for him will give him a better feel for the game
I think Flynn, Shipley, Daniels and Bonar will need to work on fitness to get a game, I was confident on Bonar but I think the coaches are having him work on different areas of his game and also his fitness but I can see him getting games early next season along with Daniels who with the delayed start to the season because of injury. Shipley just needs game time v bigger bodies and it will be interesting to see where he plays going forward because he has a good size and tackles well and just other factors of his game he needs to work on.
Flynn like most rucks is a long term prospect and I think the club is slowly easing him into the role so he can develop his forward skills also and hopefully he can remain injury free and we can see a debut next year
Next game is the curtain raiser for the Gabba clash and with the Lions having a few long term injuries it should be a good clash

Team for the Curtain raiser and 13 listed players and I think I saw 15 for the Lions so it will be a hard contest for the guys
The game will be live streamed as well for any who want to see some of the game

I noticed that no-one posted the NEAFL result from yesterday.

GWS Giants 22.14.146 d
Brisbane Lions 18.3.111

Giants goals: Perryman 4, Delahunty (next year's draft crop) 4, Sproule 3, Keeffe 2, D Buckley 2, Daniels 2, Beaumont 2, Banuelos, Bonar, Stein

Selected stats (Grimlock will post the full stats tomorrow I'm sure):
- Perryman 32D (20K, 12H), 7T, 4G (150DT)
- Keeffe 22D (13K, 9H), 2T, 2G (104DT)
- Sproule 16D, 6T, 3G (99DT)
- Kennedy 23D, 4T (91DT)
- Bonar 24D (12K, 12H), 4T (86DT)
- Shipley 27D (7K, 20H), 4T (73DT)
- Daniels 15D, 2T (63DT)

Giants now 7th, equal on the ladder (20 points) but far inferior percentage as 6th placed Brisbane. Hopefully, we've taken some confidence from the last few weeks and if we don't lose an excessive amount of first grade players can keep the core team firing in NEAFL.

Great for the guys to get the win and maybe an unlikely push for a finals spot is possible, Perryman reacted to being dropped with what is likely his highest scoring game and with the amount of listed players available it is good to see players in their best position and the spine of the team looks good, and accurate kicking is something to like about the game 22.14 and good for Stein to kick his first goal
I might try and watch the replay at some stage this week and interesting to see the bests from the stats and also the coaches comments

http://neafl.com.au/hes-a-bloody-jet-schneider-praises-midfield-group-for-giants-neafl-rise/
Coach singing the praises of the group and I am confident in the kids in this group having a good mix of youth and experience and if they can stay on the park they could have a good run into the finals
Mohr and Buntine in the defence, Keefe and Kennedy around the midfield group and then Buckley up forward with the talent in the first and second year players it is some good signs for the club
And also credit to the coach
Curtain raiser at spotless this week v Aspley so any comments from those that get to the ground will be appreciated and hopefully it is broadcast
I think Aspley are suffering from injuries as they looked really good early on in the season so maybe injuries are playing a part in the form. Swallow, Payne and Spencer are the key midfielders but depending on selection I can see Shipley and Bonar having to have strong defensive games and it is a big challenge for Flynn to come up against an ex AFL ruck the size of Spencer

Team for tomorrows game, 13 listed players and some of the better performing academy players.
and just for comparison from a quick look at the NEAFL team sheets i think the Swans have 18 and the Suns 9 which indicates the injury lists of the two teams
The game is not being streamed so any at the game early able to post a few comments would be appreciated

Coaches comments on the AFL-listed players:

Aiden Bonar - 22 disposals, 6 clearances, 5 inside 50’s
“He gave us a lot of drive around stoppage and his offensive drive was fantastic. He had a bit of tough job marking Swallow today and he did that really well, so it was a great experience for him.”

Adam Kennedy
- 26 disposals, 11 marks, 4 tackles
“Kenner’s third game back from his knee injury. He just keeps getting better. His runs have been really impressive, and his defensive actions continue to improve so I think he’ll be knocking on the door of the AFL team soon.”

Isaac Cumming
- 14 disposals, 12 tackles, 5 marks
“Isaac was good today, he had 12 tackles. We know what he has to offer offensively so to get that out of him defensively today was really pleasing.”

Lachlan Keefe
- 17 disposals, 5 marks, 5 inside 50’s
“Continues to run hard up and down the ground, he’s got a huge tank. He competes really well around stoppage too, so he was really good for us again today.”

Dylan Buckley
- 3 goals, 8 disposals
“He really impacted the game early and sparked the team. He’s just got such great energy with his tackling and kicking those goals really got us going early in the game.”

Jake Stein
- 8 disposals, 3 marks
“Steiny played a deep defensive role today, a selfless role on the resting ruck, and he did that well so didn’t really have any impact on the game, so Jake was really disciplined there.”

Brent Daniels
- 18 disposals, 4 marks, 4 inside 50’s
“Brent played around the midfield and forward and he gave us plenty of drive centre forward, and his tackling and pressure are both great features of his game.”

Harry Perryman
- 17 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 clearances
“Perryman only played the first half, unfortunately, he was unable to play the second half, however, he was one of the better ball winners in the first half, he really sparked us with his contested possessions.”

Tim Mohr
- 23 disposals, 9 rebound 50’s, 6 marks
“Again played a key defensive role. A lot of spoils and key contested moments where he won some critical contests, and he really led the back six today I thought.”

Matthew Flynn
- 25 disposals, 39 hitouts, 8 clearances
“His best performance for the club so far with 25 possessions, 21 contested. He’s been challenged to play four quarters and he most certainly did that today.”

Nick Shipley
- 3 goals, 26 disposals, 6 tackles
“Ships played mid forward, where he hasn’t played much, but he showed his talent by kicking three goals forward, so I’d say he’ll want to play a bit more time there I think.”

Zach Sproule
- 3 goals, 15 disposals
“His second half was really good. He was a bit quiet in the first half, but his second half his legs were really important to us. He gave us plenty of run and drive. Something always happens when Sproule is around the ball.”

Matt Buntine - 23 disposals, 9 marks, 5 tackles
“Outstanding. His courageous chop-out marks in front of packs, his leadership and direction is fantastic and he continues to knock on the door of the AFL team with his consistent performances.”

NEAFL's providing the full replay later in the week.

He brings contest to the ruck, but can't run with a mobile opponent, reminds me a bit of Giles, reliable but limited journeyman ruck. Glad we have him atm though

To me, halving the ruck contests (comparing his hitouts to McEvoy's) could be done by most pure ruckmen. He's better than playing Patton or HH there, but just about anyone else would be an upgrade. Giles was at least more mobile around the ground.

Given Patton's knee knock I agree, after that if he went off I think Cal was nominal "ruck"?

Cal attended a few stoppages, HH did one or two. Once Patton came back on he contested a few more ruck contests as well though.

Massive game by Flynn and hopefully he can keep it up for the rest of the season and also first game that Shipley has really dominated and with the numbers of listed players in the team it provides the structure the coaches need to play to peoples strengths
Swans this weekend will be a big test to see where some players are at and I like the Flynn Cameron match up and although not listed I can see Perryman missing with the concussion and then wether 1 or 2 emergencies fly out with the team to Perth will effect the strength of the team

Windy conditions with poor kicking in general for both teams - at HT, relatively low possession game from our front with the leaders being buntine 16 and kenners 10. Bonar playing aggressively and picking up on shipleys tackling pressure with 9 in the first half already. Flynn doing well with ruck and contested marking as well. In my opinion, Cumming in particular needs to lift his output in the second half. Being kept in the game at the moment by Sydney's inaccuracy in front of goal - scoreline currently 29-22 in favor of the swans. Not too bad at the moment considering we are missing Shipley, Buckley, Perryman and Daniels from last week.

Unfortunately outclassed and a loss today but thought it was a spirited performance despite us butchering the ball transitioning the ball from defence to attack. With no real forward targets (Sproule playing higher up and Flynn playing main ruck, though Banuelos did great with the opportunities given), bombing the ball long aimlessly in windy conditions was always going to be a tough ask for the forwards. Buntine (28 poss, 8 marks) and Kennedy (22 poss, 6 marks) were good leading the team from defence and were our top possession winners, but both need to work on lowering their eyes, and putting more precision and penetration into their kicks. Too often they kicked chaos balls high in the air and the wind carried it out on the full or to an opposition player. That being said, Bunts is doing well marking/spoiling and Kenners hasnt seemed to have lost any of his legspeed. They are tracking well for the nature of their injuries and are better for the run. Seeing good potential with Flynn as a developing ruck and he battled well in a losing team. I think he won the HO battle and marked well when the ball was there to be won. Has strung together some good games and would think he deserves a chance in the seniors soon. Bonar (16 poss, 10 tackles) had a great first half but pretty much just ran out of juice in the second - will need to build up his endurance to string together a 4 quarter performance and his 2 way running if he is to make his debut in the seniors this year. Quite liked Sproule's (19 poss, 6 tackles) game today especially in the 2nd half when he was sent into the midfield but doubt that is a position he will be playing in the senior team so would like to see him work on his forward craft and leading patterns in the coming weeks if the coach allows. Cumming (18 poss, but only 6 kicks) seems to have picked up in the second half playing from a half back position but really expected him to play better in the absence of other senior players in the team. Would have been good to see his run on the wing in tandem with Kenners and really needs to show some more dare and desperation delivering the ball by foot to his teammates.

Overall, the 75-29 scoreline was bad but could have been worse had the swans kicked straight in the second quarter. A poor but fair outcome given the tough conditions against a better opposition team given the difficulty we were always going to face scoring with a makeshift forward line. On the bright side, came out with no fresh injuries to our senior players.
