I was recently reading an article about how airlines, airports, air safety authorities and emergency services are so concerned with the way so many passengers do not follow air cabin crew directions during emergency evacuations of aircraft that they have engaged psychologists for an extensive study of this phenomena, why it has become so prevalent and ingrained all over the world and what to do about it.

Obviously panic is always going to be a problem in this situation and still can be, paradoxically it seems to be the lack of panic that is causing more issues. The main problem is passengers insisting on opening overhead lockers to retrieve bags and other carry-on items blocking other people in the process, but there's also been problems with evacuating passengers simply refusing to follow directions, filming the emergency or even stopping to take selfies. I would have found it hard to believe had I not seen videos of people running from a burning plane wheeling or carrying suitcases or going down emergency slides with carry-on items.

I just don't get how so many people behave this way.

Probably a few reasons but the main one would be ''heard it a million times before and didnt need it '' thinking

One way is to change it up every month or so . Those who havent heard it will listen and those who have will stop because their internal pattern has been interrupted

Possessional possessions. ''these are mine and I need them '' - forgetting about the suitcases in the hold

Again all passengers must put hand hold luggage in the luggage bay. Stop yer crying ladies

Or electronic locks that dont open until the plane has stopped

The evacuation is a difficult one because survival outweighs thinking or care for their fellow man ''screw you Jack I'm gonna survive '' and I can understand that

Complacent passengers who don't follow the safety demonstration are one part of the problem, and there are always problem passengers who are unruly, intoxicated or militant about not following safety - or indeed any - directions on an aircraft.

A grown man violently pushing his way past women with children to get off the plane first in an emergency is abhorrent, and not much better is some Karen losing her head during the evacuation and screaming out how 'Everyone is going to die and we need to give ourselves to Jesus'. Conversely you get some passengers who freeze out of fear and just sit or stand there, not moving at all.

But these are perhaps more understandable in an emergency, passengers behaving in a way the inhibits their own chances of survival (collecting carry-on items, taking selfies and videos) and why the phenomena is so wide-spread is not so easy to determine.

It's because no one pays attention when the flight attendant gives their spiel before take off.

Yes, not paying attention to the flight attendants is a problem, but it seems to be a far greater issue than that.

Do you think whether watching all, some of or none of the safety demonstration is going to stop some guy who is determined to take his large suitcase (which only just cleared the weight requirements) out of the overhead locker and off the plane with him when an evacuation is needed? Or some girl who stops in the middle of the emergency to take selfies? I don't think it would make a large amount of difference.

Depends on who has the fancy 3D Xray scanners

I was down the beach with my dogs.
There was this white shell thing with something living inside that spat out black stuff.People were picking it up taking pics i even seen someone walking around with one in their hands.
One lady picked it up took pics then got shiity because her digs wanted to pick it up.

I dont know what it was.

**** I hope it wasn’t a cone shell? Highly venomous

Nah was different.

Whte kinda shiny maybe 15 cm/ 20cm long .

Maybe a starfish in a shell but I'm not sure.
A starfish with body armour. This sounds like a daddy long legs type superhero that I wouldn’t mess with. Or maybe just a pissed hermit crab that grabbed a bit of plastic rubbish and thought “**** it this’ll do”
