I did mention that at one point when I was in class, apparently peanut allergies aren't anywhere near as common over there as they are here. They were shocked when I said primary (elementary!) schools generally ban peanut products from lunchboxes etc.
Interesting, I couldn't imagine going to primary school without my crunchy peanut butter sandwhich, which i still disliked but hey it was the best alternative. High school we had mega strict rules on peanuts because some annoying twat who was so allergic the mere presence of someone who had eaten peanuts set him off. Basically had to bathe in freaking sanitizer before going into classrooms he might have to go in or the library, were told to avoid bringing nut products... Call me inconsiderate but there was no freaking way I was giving up my trail bars for some kid 4 year levels below me who might go near me... :p

Still I love getting hold of American candy for this reason, reeces flavored whoppers, peanut butter cups, pop tarts (with peanut butter!). I mean even as someone allergic to normal chocolate I have so much choice! Don't even get me started on Dr Pepper or Mountain Dew Code Red, that shit is amazing.

If these people are so allergic that it could kill them then how do they know they are allergic. Surely they have come into contact before and it hasn't killed them

Would be shocking to have an allergy that bad.

I have always wondered that myself but I think some anaphylactic reactions get increasingly worse with each exposure.

The fact Starbucks is so praised says it all... The only people I know who go to the Starbucks near my uni are American exchange students or yuppy idiots. For far less you can get coffee so good you wouldn't dream of adding syrup or sugar.
Starbucks really is the best of a bad lot over there. Good luck trying to find a place that serves cappuccinos that isn't Starbucks in certain places, particularly restaurants. Their entire coffee culture is different over there, there is nowhere to really sit down and enjoy a coffee, it's all about take-away with limited, if any, seating. At the local shopping mall (quite large, had a Macys, JC Penny etc) there was literally one Starbucks with one table and a little Starbucks inside the Barnes and Noble. At my local shopping centre here (probably smaller than the one in the US I'm comparing it with) there are probably 15 places I could sit down for a latte.

Coffee is one of those things where your definition of what is good depends on where you're from. A French guy I used to play tennis with said that he much preferred coffee in America to Australia, because American coffee is a lot closer to French coffee. French coffee is quite different to the Italian style that we have here.

Yeah it's hard to imagine that when you perceive coffee time has a time to sit down, relax and socialise for the most part. Really their whole dining / takeaway cultures seems to be fairly different, hate to think how many Australian tourists forget to tip the poor bastards working over in the states.

Are there still heaps of starbucks in the city? I thought they closed heaps down little while back.
There's still one at Glenferrie, seems pretty popular with foreign students and suit wearing plebs.
