Arts & Humanities Things you've learnt about yourself

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

These are things you've learnt about yourself as you grow older. Things you realise you have a preference for, or stuff about your personality, whatever. Here are some of mine off the top of my head.
  • Re: TV shows, movies and games, I have a natural affinity to shows with a brighter colour palette. For example, I couldn't figure out why a lot of the shows I liked were on the channel USA (in America), until I realised that a lot of their shows have brighter colours than others.

  • I prefer savoury over sweet. When kids wanted lollies, I wanted shapes. When some wanted Nutella, I wanted vegemite. I don't eat cookies or anything like that, lollies, chocolate, whatever.

  • I have a short temper, but only regarding specific things. Usually I'm pretty chill, but there are some things that set me off, and I haven't figured out the logic behind it yet.

  • I'm a night owl. I might be tired, say, 8pm and I'm holding out until 11pm or 12am to go to bed. But by that time, I'm wide awake and don't feel like sleeping at all. Like now. Oh, and everytime I've tried to sleep before 11, I'll wake up around 12am-1am and then can't go back to sleep, and eventually stay up until like 5am.

I get migraines from FPS perspective camera video games.

I get migraines if listening to disc jockeys on radio talking, either them babbling on or conversing with people who call in. Especially when there's too much bullshit being spoken.

I get migraines when listening to a TV show that is a panel of people talking about whatever -- be it sport, news, current affair, or entertainment shows. Especially when there's too much bullshit being spoken -- like being overly excited about unexciting topics.

I get migraines when there's too much talking going on around me, like a large crowd, a crowded train/bus or bar. Especially when there's too much bullshit being spoken -- guys being typical guys or girls being typical girls. That degree of self-importance.

I get migraines when someone I'm conversing with has an annoying voice, multitone voice, or talks too long. Especially when there's too much bullshit being spoken -- guys being typical guys or girls being typical girls. That degree of self-importance.

I get migraines when a movie I'm watching, a book I'm reading, or album I'm listening to, becomes boring or preposterous or loses its uniqueness etc.

I get migraines when people give me the shits.

I get migraines when I observe people behaving silly, uncool -- like people dancing or just moving around on their feet excessively or flailing their arms about uncalled for etc.

I get migraines when I observe so many physically beautiful and personality-sweet girls in a day and know I can't have them all.

I could go on.

I've learnt after 40 years that the female species we share this planet with aren't that ####ing mysterious after all.

A completely different person with alcohol, hate myself actually.

Now plan on never having a drop of the stuff for the rest of my life.

I learned I can't hear very well with reasonably loud background noise, like music or crowds talking, compared to other people. Even if you are right in front of me and screaming I can barely hear you. It makes concerts, clubs, pub scenes, etc very difficult and like I'm intentionally ignoring others. For many years I thought it was the same for everyone but then slowly realised I was the only one asking others to repeat themselves and someone further away was able to pick up words that I miss.

I'm somewhat similar but not sure how it works.

I can hear people fine, but sometimes I can't differentiate what they're saying and everything else. I can hear sounds coming out of their mouth but it just sounds like noise and not words.

Yeah, that sounds like me. I guess its a bit like eyes and depth perception, everything's fine until you reach out to grab something or walk down a flight of stairs. In our case its sound.

Both of you guys I highly recommend you get your hearing tested. An audiologist will be able to explain it all very well to you.

I've learnt that I have an innate ability to pick out cray-cray in a woman by looking at their eyes. An ability probably shared by many.
