That reminds me, I re-did my mock-up a little while ago. Posted in other places, but may as well do it here too:

MCG and PRO redevelopments notwithstanding (just use your imagination there), this is what the precinct will be when all the wishes of the current tenants and stakeholders are weighed up.

It'll take another ~20 years before the Victorian government fully commits to it (sparked by an early renewal of the AFL Grand Final contract). But you don't need a crystal ball to know you haven't even seen Melbourne, Olympic, and Yarra parks' final form.

This is great in theory, but can you imagine if AFLW, Melbourne Victory, Melbourne United and a concert are all scheduled in the precinct on the same day? The traffic/demand on public transport would bring the city to a standstill.

Presumably you don't mean a concert at Rod Laver Arena, otherwise the number of people in the precinct at one time would still be less than several AFL and AO days.

In the extremely rare instance of a Taylor Swift kind of act playing an MCG concert, the dates of such an event would be known 9 months in advance, so the other sports would schedule around it (they already do this).

Lets say, a football match (25k), basketball (12k), cricket (40k) and a concert at MCA (6k) are all on within a 24 hour period in November. Would the city really allow an AFLW game to be staged on the same day as one or more of these?

It just doesn't make sense to shove another mid capacity arena in an area that already has it's fair share

Once again, that scenario equates to less people in the precinct than several AFL and AO days. Anzac Day, for instance, has around 95k at the MCG and 25k at AAMI Park. It's not a problem because the games don't finish at the same time.

Taylor Swift at the MCG and an NBL game at John Cain Arena were on the same Saturday. To avoid finishing at the same time, the NBL moved forward to 5.30pm. Soccer just played on the Thursday night instead.

Rather than waiting 20 years to begin work on a 15-20k venue, I think the AFL's move should be to lockdown a premium location asap and build it up bit by bit.

Chances of achieving that are much greater if it's not touted as just an AFLW venue but rather an 8k women's sport venue, thereby drawing support of both the state government and other codes.

A smaller 110m x 140m oval would probably have little impact on scoring (so say the stats), but it would make it an enticing venue for women's soccer and cricket, as well as the Melbourne Storm when they finally get an NRLW team.

Using the Gosch's Paddock example (with the argument being the other venues in the precinct do not sufficiently cater to women's sport), building the first stand right next to AAMI Park would minimise the occupation of green space:



So it'd basically be a North Sydney Oval but in a better location. Cricket maybe gets it in Dec, Jan and Feb (would be rather useful as Junction Oval capacity is <4k these days and floodlight proposals keep getting rejected). Men's teams can play there but women's teams get priority or something. Rectangle teams train on the oval in the south-east corner, because Melbourne FC intend to leave.

Then eventually build a northern stand to get it to ~13k, followed by an eastern to stand to get it to an 18k horse shoe.

Is your scale correct? It seems that the oval playing area is similar to AAMI - too small for footy or cricket.

Fence-to-fence, AAMI Park is 135m long and the arena I've put next to it is scaled down to about 150m long (keeping in mind it's on a greater angle). Width is about 80m v 120m.

Big enough for the 55m boundaries required for women's international cricket, and bigger than the smallest AFLW ground.
