And I guess we could approach every draft with this in mind - that we are better off avoiding the unknown and targetting players that other clubs are prepared to part with. Meanwhile the likes of Koschitzchke, Judd, Hodge, Reiwoldt etc.. will continue to move to become franchise players for the next decade at other clubs.

How many top 2 draft picks do we intend to actually have in the near future?

its not as tho we were ever in a position to get the above 3 and as for last year when we traded for jono it was actually for 4th pick and we then were able to at least still get a top 15 pick.who knows schultz could turn out to be the next carey.
btw when was the last time we were able to attract a top line player to the club?

cheers!

And I think you're underestimating the power of hype.

Maybe Johnson wasnt worth Torney + pick but he is still a better player then Bowden. Johnson goes in to get the ball unlike Bowden who stays around the outsides of packs. Bowden in more likely to pick up more possessions then Johnson except the quality in which he disposes of the ball is much better then Joel's.

Bowden might have a long left foot which is as straight as anything except that he doesnt do these things often enough.

Well, rfc, I think we've met somewhere in the middle on the issue. Phew!

I haven't ever said that Bowden's better than Johnson ... just that he's no worse.

My initial point was that I just wanted Tiger people to scrutinize Johnson's games a bit more, as I felt that he was getting a free ride at the expense of others who were no less effective than the newcomer.

The jury's still out on him as far as I'm concerned.

BTW - despite what was in the minds of many of us rank and file footy followers, most football people knew in the leadup to last year's draft that Carlton were going to lose their top two picks, thereby granting Richmond No. 2 pick by default. St Kilda were certainly counting on it, that's for sure. A former coach of that club told me so in person. And Greg Miller even stated in the leadup that he expected such an outcome, and that even a number 2 pick wasn't too much to cough up for Johnson. There was no doubt that our heirarchy knew we were foregoing a shot at Wells, etc...

There is no doubt in my mind that both players would help anyside become better. Johnson has the score on the board.

Bowden I think has got more natural ability than Johnson but lacks the dedication to became an elite, and that is where johnson is knocking on the door.

I can still remember when Bowden, before his shoulder injuries, Tackled. He used to Tackle as hard as anyone. Now we would have a player in the mould of Matty Dundas running around.

Whens trade week?
