Quoted by dimma we were looking to spend the 6 Million on a Judd like player.

this i reckon deserves a thread because is there any one other than Judd that could walk into a our side and be that "missing link" like carltank?

so i raise the question if you could be in Dimma's shoes who would you throw lets say the "kitchen sink at":thumbsu:

We are or were??? I dont understand.... If they start talking about getting a high profile player and throw millions at them then they wont get a cent out of me. The money I'm donating I want spent on player development..... Collingwood has shown that you dont need to spend millions on recruiting stars from other clubs.

We're not looking at spending $6mil on a player like Judd. What Hardwick said was that we want to be in a position come the start of free agency where we'll be able to make a play for a Judd like player.

We want to prepay our salary cap so that we have plenty of room to make a play for a star player under free agency rules. Not spend $6m chasing a player like Judd, not sure there is a player in the league worth that sort of money, those that would be in the future are already on our list.

I agree, We need at least 3 more years of building before that type of play.

Judd is overated anyway and Swan should have won the brownlow last year IMO.

I hope egos and self interest doesn't get in the way of our premiership hopes!!!

It is also to ensure that we can keep our own star players as teams would also be offering some cash to players like Cotchin, Deledio, Martin etc... so we need to match their offer.

I find this kind of talk just vulgar!

We are a young, inexperienced and developing team and in no way are we "1 player" away from a premiership tilt.
(I reckon Carlton have rooted up their current challenge with the Judd experience... chuck Kennedy into their forward half & they are possibly closer to it than with Steve Austin in their line-up)

Win, lose or draw, 1 thing I am loving about this bunch of young Tigers is their 'togetherness' and sense of team and a common purpose... I would hate to throw a mercenary into the club at the moment to upset the feel...

Keep our $$$$ to keep our stars and keep up with the astute recruiting IMO...

There is no talk of doing it now, just in a few years when we are pushing for a flag
Free agency doesn't come in until next year anyway so no need to panic

Also no mention of saying we will do it, but knowing that the option is there. Its more to do with prepaying our salary cap so we aren't wasting the 7.5% of the TPP that we aren't paying.

100% agree and West Coast today just proved it!!!

You win on hard work and development , not bling and hot air!!!

I agree with Roachy and Mr Magic, starved of success for three decades ide hate for our next premiership to be tainted by the free agency or having it come off the back of a mercenary. I understand you shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch and by no means am i saying premiership glory is easy to come by or that we are a shoe in for one in the near future. Should it come along, it would be that much sweeter if it was a group that had built something special from the ground up.

Agree, it creates better team unity as well and game toughness and team effort.

Part of the problem on the weekend , IMO , is some of our recent success ha been on the backs of some of younger stars. When up against a more formidable opponent like Melbourne who are more even the belief buckles a little which doesn't help.

So when you get a hardened developed team as opposed to a pinch it from stars you should get a more balanced hardened effort like Collingwood which you need to win the the in your face pressure finals and win that elusive premiership!!

When you are up against you need to rely on efforts from all the players. You won't get that with big bucks for high profile mercenaries

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the context of the quote from Dimma was more along the lines of having the facilities and staff in place so that when a Judd-like player became available then our club would not be disadvantaged in the attempt to lure him by having poor facilities, support staff, etc than the Carlton, Collingwood and Essendons of this world.

well todays loss by the filth, against the weagles shows you that "1 Judd like player" in your squad means absolutely zero some days.

But other days he has got them over the line and who knows what impact he is having on the team behind the scenes.

I wouldnt want to go for another Nathan Brown type again even though he was good value before getting injured. For what you give up, it would require Judd type leadership skills on top of talent. Im not sure Brown was a real leader.

I agree with your 'filth' reference though and if you were just rejoicing in their loss today rather than really believing that Judd would not be a value pick up then I can respect that.

Depends on your definition of "Value"
For Pick 3, 4 & 20 (effectively as Kennedy was Pick 4 and now gun kpp) I'm not so sure that's considered value.

How much did collingwood pay to get Ball and Jolly?

yes it was mostly that, but also being aware that a single player isn't a magical 'cure-all'.. *cough* Cousins *cough*

Ball was taken pick 30 in the national draft.... is on about 400k a year. Personally I'm not sure why we didn't take him at 19.

Jolly wanted to come back to vic... and approached the pies so it wasn't like the pies were hell bent on getting Jolly.

We have 4 players that other clubs will likely throw a fair bit of coin to get. Lids, Cotch, Martin and Jack... you could even throw in Rance on present form. I'd be keeping some spare cash to keep those.

Reading the rules on free agency it seems the players that are most dangerous are the players not in the top ten highest paid player list because the original club doesn't have the right to match payment offered by a new club.
In that case we are much better off trying to draft and keep our top tier players and poach from the fringes...
