Some of you may find the premise of this thread to be a 'no brainer' - i do but I've just had an argument over this and thought i'd let the GD jury decide.

Does next weekend mean this weekend coming OR the following weekend? I reckon this weekend means the weekend looming and next weekend means the following weekend, i thought everyone knew this, but alas some people don't.

what do you think?

Firstly, I think this a very intersting topic you've raised. I'm not sure I agree with you though.

I would suggest that either this or next could be used for the weekend coming up. The following weekend being the weekend after next.

One way you could use next for the following weekend is if you premised it with "this". That is "not this weekend, next weekend"

This is only a personal preference though. I certainly don't want to go around making people talk the way I think is right. Not that I have a problem with people who are passionate about language either. I respect it, in fact.

Just my thoughts

Do you think, perhaps, that these situations may be avoided if everyone used "next" for "this" weekend? And spoke of the following weekend as the weekend after "next" or "this" one?

Just an idea

No it can't, 'next weekend' implies the following weekend to most normal people.


The fact that you distinguish 'next weekend' by premising it with 'not this weekend proves my point.

Well nicky, you've broken apart my argument very well, it certainly wasn't flawless! I do see some questionable assertions in your response but I've already "thrown in my two cents" and I'm hardly an expert on the matter.

I don't believe I'm trying to suck up to established posters, at least not conciously. Maybe I need to reflect on this?

Again, I respect your passion for language and your ability to break down an argument. I hope there's no bad blood.

Next weekend means next weekend.
This weekend means this weekend coming.

Say it's Wednesday and you say 'Yeah, next Thursday I'm going blah blah blah' then people assume that you're talking about the next day. That's annoying.

Well it certainly appears I might have "picked the wrong horse" on this occassion. If everyone here says next weekend is the weekend after next then it most probably is.

MartyThomas, do you realise our two surnames mirror those of two of Collingwood's finer young prospects? Who we both nominally support? Bit of a funny little coincindence don't you think?

Also when you were a child and you were driving on a long trip and needed to relieve yourself, and your dad said "we'll stop at the next petrol station" did he mean the first or the second one you were to come across?

And is the next in line to the throne Charles or William?

There might be a pattern here, though I'm sure there isn't...
 
I think it depends on the day of the week.

If it's a Monday, next weekend is probably more likely to mean the weekend coming up, but any day after a Wednesday, I think next weekend is next weekend.
 
I have this argument with my mum all the time.

I'll say next weekend (the weekend after the one coming up), and she'll think I mean the weekend coming up.

Her way of saying it is: next weekend/day/etc is the one coming up. The one after that she'll say, for example if she was talking about Saturday 22nd, she'd say "Saturday week".

I don't really get it myself. As I'm with nicky, that it is a no-brainer.

Just like how there are people who try and argue that Monday is the first day of the week, when clearly it is Sunday.

Firstly, to all the posters on this thread, thank you for contributing to such an interesting discussion. I hope you have experienced the rewarding stimulation I have been fortunate enough to, impossible without all of you. Just goes to show again that the sum is, indeed, greater than its parts.

I feel that fantastic_crows is approaching the truth we've been seeking.

"Next" weekend is more appropriately used when you are in the current weekend and for the first few days of the new week. Then, "this" weekend is more apt until the monday, when it becomes "the weekend just past".

So the following weekend is either "the weekend after next" if its earlier in the week or, alternatively, "the weekend after this one" if its later in the week or the weekend

Just a suggestion

I see the week as starting on monday. So "This week" is the week you're currently in. Therefore "this weekend" means the weekend of this week. And "next weekend" means the weekend of the next week.
