Watched it today and thought it was great, better than my thought and it actually took the time to explain Thor's origins to an non fan of the comic such as myself, Kenneth Branagh's direction was lively and the sfx was decent, although i have seen better. Chris Hemsworth was great as Thor and did Australia proud but dear me, Natalie Portman was irritating as Jane Foster. The reality is she cannot act and only gets cast cause of her admittedly good looks but honestly her performance tarnished an otherwise great film

wouldve been better if the movie stayed in his homeland. big war with the enemy wouldve been better.....

You're not serious are you?

They are trying to tie this in with S.H.I.E.L.D and the whole Avengers thing and you want the movie set exclusively OFF planet Earth?????

They need to tie it in with Earth. What's the point of a Thor movie if he isn't banished to Earth and has to live among humans?

In that sense, the movie worked perfectly with an equal amount of time split between Asard and Earth.

Also, Portman was great as the love interest. Are you guys just bagging her because she is a "known" actress? Her performance was certainly adequare and I would argue she and Hemsworth had great chemistry.

You know when an actress has to "fall for the ale character" and it doesn't seem believable? Well, her gradual infactuation with Thor was believable, and a credit to the script and the story, that it actually wasn't corny.

Saw it today and was better than I thought it would be. Portman was fine in the movie, what do people want exactly from the role she had to play? Would give it a 7/10.

Natalie Portman is a good actress but yeah this movie seems a strange choice for her when I 1st saw the trailers I was like Natalie Portman in a movie like Thor?!? Just seems out of place.

she was in those horrible Star Wars prequels, so Thor isn't much of a stretch is it?

Saw it last night.

A very fun and enjoyable film. No Dark Knight, but no Fantastic Four either. I'd put it probably just short of Iron Man in terms of enjoyment.

The opening scenes in Asgard are a fun cross between Flash Gordon and Middle Earth, and instantly gives this film a greater scale than any comic film to date. This was a big reason why I was worried about a Thor film, trying to marry the worlds of Gods and humans, especially when combining with Earth-bound characters for the Avengers (yes yes, Superman, Batman, Nolanverse etc etc). But I thought it was smart to make Asgard simply a more developed world rather than some Heavenly metaphorical otherworld (ala Clash of the Titans) where evolved beings reside, and smart to play into how it's believed our Gods might've been visitors from other worlds. Everything to do with Asgard and the transfer between worlds is right on.

But of course you can't polish a ****, and all the fancy effects and massive sets are useless if your actors don't do their part. Thankfully, Hemsworth and Hiddleston in particular are instantly convincing. Hemsworth will be seen as the big riser from this, and rightly so as he carries the film both as someone who can kick arse and be impatient, but can also show a sensitivity and ability to emote. He'll be a star, possibly the next Hugh Jackman (Sam Worthington just lost his meal ticket IMO). But I was particularly impressed with Hiddleston as Loki, as he brings a real Shakespearian feel to the character, so I can only assume he's got some classical training behind him (feel free to correct me). When I saw the casting, my memory instantly went back to Wes Bentley in Ghost Rider, and I shuddered. But I needn't have worried. He plays the trickster to perfection, totally believable at the start as a dough-eyed supporter of his big brother, but moreso when it's his turn to sneer and bellow his evil machinations of conquest. You can never tell what he's thinking or feeling, even when he's showing a particular emotion, because he's done such a good job convincing you that nothing is as it seems with him. Good writing and good acting.

Just as impressive is the supporting cast. Hopkins as Odin does what he needs to, taking centre stage as if he were back on the West End. But just as impressive are Stellan Skarsgård and Natalie Portman as Thor's Earth-bound allies. It's so important in a film like this that when you have a character so larger-than-life that you need good actors to support him and lend credibility where needed, and these two accomplish this (even Kat Dennings, as the comic relief, is only used when her contributions are actually needed...something many directors don't seem to understand how to do). Thor's band of merry men (and women) are all vey likeable too, and you believe they can kick serious ass.

The story moves at an efficient pace, neither rushed or lagging at any stage. It's a very logically told story, and every move the characters make perfect sense. No unnecessary subplots, no tedious exposition, no scene-upon-scene of tortured indecision, it just all makes sense. With a character like Thor it would've been possible to take the story in many different directions but they were obviously aware of their limitations (and to be a bit pretentious and cynical, the limitations of the audience they're aiming at).

Overall there wasn't a whole lot wrong with the film. Admittedly, they didn't try to do anything we haven't seen before. They used solid actors, good writers and told a story that we've heard plenty of times before, and done it well. They didn't take many risks (mainly because the concept of Thor was always thought to be really hokey, thus making any missteps all the more egregious), and this isn't always a bad thing. The general rule of thumb with films like this is to try and top what's been done before, or just do something totally opposite, but sometimes it works better just to tell a simple story and do it with some heart (Iron Man is a prime example of this). You don't need a bigger explosion, or more contemporary wisecracks, just tell an enjoyable story.

Branagh has surprised me with how he can handle a large scale film, and we certainly haven't seen the last of Hemsworth and Hiddleston (even beyond the Avengers). Thor is a very enjoyable film that doesn't try and reinvent the wheel, but to entertain as best as possible. I'd give it a solid B+

He did an epic film production of Hamlet in 1996 in which he directed and starred. So it is not surprising really.

True, but directing a Marvel summer blockbuster is still a different thing altogether to epic Shakespeare. But your point is well made :thumbsu:

I would like to add also my disappointment they didn't use this song in the closing credits. BOOOOO!

I wouldn't go that far myself. But it's certainly in the top bracket.

Iron Man, Spidey 1&2, XMen 1&2 and Blade (extremely underrated due to its awful sequels) ahead IMO.

(I've got a good feeling about XMen: First Class and Capt America too, mainly because of the times they're set in)

That was an awesome film, very well done. Helmsworth does surprise me, he will have a good career as he can actually hold the role. Portman looking doe eyed and very nice - gotta admit i'd also drive a bus through Kat Dennings.

Watched it today along with most of the people on the Sunshine Coast....absolutely packed.

Loved it. Was a great movie, and just continues to strengthen the Marvel series. Can't wait to see Captain America.

Thought Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman were great in their respective roles.

She became hugely well known because of a sci-fi film, she's not that an illogical a choice for these kinds of films.
