With a possible Elimination Final against the Sydney Swans or possibly Freo coming up in a few weeks, the first week of finals in Melbourne is looking quite full on.

What looks like being:

COLL vs WCE - MCG Friday Night
ST K vs ESS - MCG Sat Afternoon
CARL vs SYD/FREO/NM - ETIHAD Sat Night
GEEL vs HAW - MCG Sunday

or any reshuffle of these games, is going to leave one of the Elim Finals playing at Etihad Stadium, and unfortunately if it happens to be a St K vs. Ess match up, we're going to be the one that has Etihad.

Yes, this is speculation, but I just wanted to get the general consensus of the BigFooty Blues in regards to what you think of Carlton playing a home final at Etihad.

Me? I don't like it at all- although there is no real other option- they're hardly going to plonk the Eagles and the Pies there, and two Vic teams in St Kilda and Essendon would probably get MCG priority despite us finishing higher.

Also, Etihad would be too small.

We would pull 70,000 to a game against Sydney at the MCG. 10,000 Melbourne based Swans, another 5,000 travellers, 5,000 neutrals (MCC etc.) and 50,000 Blues (5-10k travellers) seeing the first home final in near on a decade.

Not too sure how many the Saints and Bombers would pull in all honesty, probably more, that's why we will probably be shafted to Etihad, despite St. Kilda probably putting in a request to play a final at Etihad.

Its bullshit Walshy abbsolute bullshut, fifth best side in the comp and get shafted, Essendon are playing an away final they have no right to get the MCG in front of us...members will miss out and it is our home final...absolute joke! Whats the purpose of finishing higher on the ladder when we dont get the ground we want to fit al our supporters in..no better than finishing 6th or 7th in fact if we did that we'd be at the G! AFL are money hungry not about looking after the higher finishing clubs and accomodating for their supporters...stuff the bombers they are playing an away final...why is everybody conceding to Etihad.???.we deserve the MCG we have 45000 members, Essendon and St Kilda have finished lower than us, Essendon are playing an AWAY FINAL!! It is bullshit i'm hoping the club pushes hard for the MCG and goes on record to say that as the higher finishing side we deserve and have earned the right to play there!

  • There will be x3 games at the MCG, one Friday night, one Saturday day and one Sunday Day.
  • Pies and Cats will have priority, so will get Friday night and Saturday Day respectively to give them the longest recovery time respectively.
  • 5th place will then get the next best time slot in regards to time, meaning we will most likely get Saturday night
  • The Essendon/St. Kilda game will then fall to the Sunday MCG slot.

It sucks, but thems the breaks. Guess we should have beaten the Bulldogs ..........

some talk over on the main board that due to fixturing for the top 2 sides to give them maximum break between week 1 and 2 we're likely to end up on Sunday at the MCG...please god!!

Meh, its not as if it advantages the side we play, we should be able to win anywhere. We did hand the Swans their arse on a platter there earlier in the season and just toweled up Freo at Subi and they are like possums this year. All will be fine, trust me:thumbsu:

Unless Carlton get a serious case of stage fright, or are playing an Essendon side with nothing to lose, Carlton will win a Melbourne elimination final against 8th easily. I have waited 10 years to see Carlton play a final in Melbourne, and I would prefer it to be at the MCG, but I will take a packed Dome full of Blue.

That is unfair it will not be a home advantage, we playing at a place we don't really want to but have a contract. We should have the option on where we play if we get 5th against 8.

When you look at it logically we'll get Etihad because the AFL wont want to give 5th the Sunday slot. .. We can and should win wherever it is, the only part that is disappointing is that members will miss out on tickets. .. Which hits close to home having never seen a Carlton play in a final I've been sweating on getting a chance since I moved to Melbourne a few years ago. ..

Carlton V Sydney/Fremantle won't even draw 40,000 to Etihad. People don't show up to finals at this venue. If its Carlton v North all games have to be at MCG, and Coll v WCE should be moved to Etihad.

The AFL wouldn't allow Collingwood to play a Qualifying Final at Etihad- and I know we wouldn't draw more than 40-45,000 to Etihad- that's my point!

A few years ago the finals were Hawks (5) vs Crows (8) and Pies (6) vs Swans (7).

Both were on Saturday, Hawks game at Etihad and Pies game at MCG.

Ranking doesn't really come into it, finals are scheduled on a 'best-fit' basis IIRC.

If we were 6th and playing a Melbourne side, we'd demand the G over a 5th place side playing Sydney.

If it happens, it's our own fault for ****ing up a top 4 spot.

1 v 4 or 5v 8 will definatly play on the Sunday. Up to the AFL to work out who that is. If north sneaks in, u would think the Carlton game would b Sunday as north play the Sunday twilight in rd 24

on one week at a time last night they had the teams records at each ground, we were 75% at the 'G and 50% at the dome.

i would say the saints and essendon would almost want to play at the dome, the both have better records at that ground. essendons recent record at the 'G is shocking.

the swans had a 0-5 record at the mcg from the last two years as well.

i want the game to be at the 'G cause its been 10 years since we had a final in melbourne but i am just happy to be watching the blues in september.

ffs i was 17 years old when I last went to a final. BRING IT ON!!!!

Historically the winner of 6v7 plays the loser of 2v3 in week 2 on FRIDAY NIGHT ( last 10 years)
That being the case unlikely either of those 2 matches would be played on Sunday.
Therefore most likely Carlton play Sunday this would be at the MCG

Unfortunately This year they could do;

Coll v Eagles Friday night MCG
Carl v Syd/Freo/Nth Sat arvo Dome
Geel v Haw Sat night MCG
Ess v StK Sun arvo MCG

Coll get 7 day
Eagles 6 day
Carl 7 day
Swans Freo 7 Nth 6
Geel 8 day
Haw 7 day
Ess 14 day
StK 8 day

If results go to seeding

week2
Haw v StK MCG Sat pm
West v Carl Subiaco Sat arvo

Much prefer to get Sunday at the MCG but unlikely

The chance of there being no Friday night game in trhe 2nd week, is as likley as Essendon winning the flag. Zilch.

Either Carlton or Collingwood would be at the G on Sunday! Hopefully playing each other...haha

Yep play the best club in the Competition with over 71,000 members at Etihad!

Friday night Collingwood Vs West Coast would draw 75,000!

Wherever we play we just need to deal with it. In order to be a good side we need to be able to win at both Etihad and the MCG. If Etihad doesn't suit the play style we use at the MCG then we'll just have to modify it so we can play well there. Collingwood are able to win, and win convincingly at both venues, Geelong too. This is why they're the best two teams in the competition. We need to be able to to do the same.

Wouldnt say the pies are overly convincing there. Outplayed by Adelaide for most of the game b4 running over the top of them in the last, and last week against the saints battled to a 20 point win. Those games at the G would of been comfy 10 goals + wins
