I know that it's still early but we have seen a glimpse of what our 2006 draftees have to offer.

Gumby- showed some good signs against west coast, still a fair way off playing regular senior footy as he is still quite lean. but all in all i can't complain about what i have seen.

Jetta- seems like we have a steal here at pick 18. he showed just how much class he has against west coast. i would expect him to play between 7-15 games this year.

Hislop- he has a great attack on the ball and the man. if we can control his agression he should be a very valuable part of the team in the years to come.

Davey- pencil him in for round 1. his pressure is amazing. need i say no more

Houli- oozes class. great skills and he gets other people involved in the game. i would expect him to play a similiar amount of games as leroy.

Riemers- haven't seen anything of him. as he was a bottom age draftee this was expected. should get a decent run at bendigo.

i guess all the hype after the draft was warranted. it seems like we have a great batch of youngsters. the last two years of drafting seems to have given us some great hope for the future.

your thoughts???????

Yeah, I think we along with Geelong really r*ped the draft this year.
Carlton fans are fair spewing they passed up Jetta with pick 17 to take Hampson (ruckman). They were scared that we would take the ruckman with pick 18, which I think we had no plans to. They could have taken Jetta 17 and Hampson 19.

Bit early to tell isn't it !
At this time of year every club supporter thinks their draft picks are all going to turn out to be guns.

Its more than likely that 50% of last years picks won't be on our list in four years time.

In saying that, Jetta was an absolute steal.
Would have been happy with him at pick 2.

Thus far, we can only be wrapped with what we picked up.

if you look at the drafter website, their pre-draft prediction was:

Jetta 8, Hislop 15, Houli 17.

Davey was old for a draftee, so his number may be misleading, but it seems he is definitely AFL ready, and like his brother loves to put defensive pressure on in our forward line, something we really need.

From all reports, and from watching a few games thus far, the above seems to be a better indication of their talents than what we actually picked them up at, which is a bonus for us.

Hanging to see Hislop in action. If he can be the player I have read he will be, adding to Lonegran and Watson, there is a core of midfielders who can carry the hard load for a long time. Add the outside players with legspeed we have, and our midfield's future doesnt look as bad anymore.

To me, Jetta has looked very poised and ready to go in the pre-season games he has played. Very impressed with him. Doesnt "seem" like a rookie, like the greener Houli does for example.

Gumby will take a little more time, like all KPP, but you can see he has it.

Overall, we have to happy at this stage. Anything can happen tho.

Yes,more needs to be seen from him

Dunno about that.......

Yes,hope is the key word here.

Considering the 06 draft had similar if not more depth than 2001, I believe it's real possibility that every player we drafted will make it.

In fact, im prepared to say our performance at the 06 draft may be the best ever by a club!!

Big call yes, but consider and compare St. Kilda's effort in 2001, perhaps the best in modern history.

2. Ball - Houli
5. Clarke - Jetta
13. Dal Santo - Hislop
21. Maguire - Gumby
37. Montagna - Davey
49. Houlihan - Reimers

Have you seen them play, Not just at Essendon? They're incredibly talented and I'd be very dissapointed if we don't have atleast 5 of the 6 picks at the club in 4 years.

Something dramatic, such as a serious injury, would be the only thing that I can think of that would make us get rid us these talented youngsters.

We can't afford to get rid of Jetta or Davey because of their pace and skills.

Gumbleton will take a few years anyway.

Houli's work ethic will ensure he becomes a weekly starter in our team in a few years.

And Tommy is the hardest player at our club, he's the only one at our club that consistantly dives in to get the ball out. He make take some time to get some muscle on him though.

Reimers is the only one that I could imagine going within 4 years... and that's only because I've never seen him play.

That would be a good result but I dont agree with how you've matched them up.

It should be ranked by how good they are:

Gumby - Ball (Although Ball can't really win a game, and we're all hoping Gumby turns into the game-winner that is expected)
Hislop - Dal Santo (This would be an incredible result)
Houli - Maguire (hard to compare but Houli has potential to be better)
Jetta - Montagna (Not a bad comparison, Jetta has more skill but like Montagna I feel he may be inconsistant)
Davey - Clarke (I don't rate Clarke at all!)
Reimers - Houlihan (No comment)

I believe you have a point, this group definately has potential to be the best group drafted by a club in the same year.

I think you might find a couple of players, and supporters argue with that.

At the very least a couple of Johnsons,Pev,McViegh and Hird have him covered for the time being

Ok, maybe I over exaggerated, but the way he goes in for the ball without caring about what's around him is incredible.

he gave a way three free kicks in the all-star game for high tackles or a push/smash in the back. he then got suspended a week later in the VFL

sorry just got knocked out with the hype.

i think jetta and davey are the only two we can say anything at all about at the moment. give it time people.
we sure did well in the talent stakes but lets not go comparing them to st kilda's draft in 2001 just yet. i like all essendon supporters was wrapped with who we picked up, but i don't want to go talking rubbish until they have dominated one or two afl premiership games.

Daytripper has a point , history says that if 4 out of the 6 make it we will have an extremly good draft. You only have to go through the draft history of every club to find that it is very likley that 3 out of our 6 draftee's from the last draft wont be around in 4 years time.

hulld mate u make a gud case but what day tripper said it is far too early to tell how the youngsters will cope in the AFL home and away season. they all have shown glimpses of talent some more than others but it is far too early to tell. Nab cup is a funny thing and can often be misleading in judging peoples progress over pre season and in the competition.. wait for the boys to play min of 10 games then you can make a fair and decent opinion.

in hinesight they played well and COULD be future stars of the dons.

Houli reminds me of Stanton & Dyson during their 1st year.

He is ready to go. I think he will play around 12 games this seaon.

I think Houli will have quite a big year and barring injuries will play a lot of games this year.

Davey is older and more seasoned so should also have a really good year.

Jetta imo is way over hyped so far, and needs to get a lot more of the ball.
I understand he will never be a prolific ball winner if he stays as a small forward, but when the game steps up in the real season, i think he might struggle a little.

In that case, my predictions would be Michael (for obvious reasons), Reimers and ****.

I was actually talking about the National Draft kids and after watching Reimers play on Picket he looked just as impresive as the others.
