Thoughts On The Port Adelaide Game

My wording in my original post wasn't flash but you get my drift. I think your mid age talent has more to do with brilliant recruiting/trading rather than any magic coaching abilities of Williams. Look at the multitude of GENUINE talent you have on your list between the age 22-28:

Motlop - A 1st round draft pick. Showed at the Kanagas that he had a heap of talent. Must admit I was somewhat jealous when you guys recruited him.

K Cornes - Top 20 draft pick. Burned for Glenelg before picking recruited.

C Cornes - Top 10 draft pick

S Burgoyne - Top 12 drafrt pick.

B Ebert - Had already won a Magarey Medal before Chocco got his hands on him.

Rodan - see Deleido and the Richmond affect. When he first came onto the scene, I though he was going to be a star. But 5-7 years at Richmond tends to destroy your reputation.

Tredrea/P Burgoyne - Recruited at clubs inception.

Brogan - Probably one of the few you could say Williams has turned into gold.

However, I think you are right when you say Chocco is better and quicker at getting rid of average players than Craigy is. I doubt players with limited talent like Perrie, Doughty, Jericho, Biglands, Bode and even Shirls would have spent as much time on the Port list as they have on ours. Matt Bode being the perfect example. So I suppose you could say that Williams already has the GENUINE talent at his disposal whereas IMO Craigy is a better developer of footballers. Howeover on the flip side, Williams is better and more ruthless ( and righty so ) when it comes to list management that NC.

Hope this makes sense, my head hurts.

I doubt that many of those players would have been drafted in the first place had Neil been in charge earlier in the piece.

Danyle Pearce - 20 odd touches, zero tackles on a night made for tackling? I wasn't at the game, so I'm not sure if he's unaccountable, lacks defensive intensity, has a leave pass not to chase or just had one of those nights where he didn't catch someone.

Mcleod also had 0 tackles. I think both players had a decent impact on how their teams played though.

Just going over the Gameday Live stats then.

Goodwin - 39 possesions

However, he's listed at 25 uncontested possesions and 11 contested possesions. Obviously that adds up to 36.

Is there another classification? I wouldn't have thought so....

Fair comment, Macca.

I'm not knocking the kid - I may not have watched him enough to assess how he is defensively. McLeod's got a licence to play off his man, but when it comes to having to make a spoil, or to chase and tackle, there's no issue with him doing it.

As I said a few posts ago, I don't recall seeing Pearce close down and tackle pretty too often as his speed would permit. I'm interested to know whether that's just something I haven't noticed through not watching Port closely enough, or if defensively he could do better.

Fair comment, but yes if you watch more games you will see him run, chase, tackle and do 1% plenty of times. He is a good player with a great attitude.

According to the final siren website, Pearce has averaged only 1.6 tackles per game this year (22 tackles from 14 games).

The only player in their top 10 (based on Champion Data ratings points) with fewer tackles on average is Brendan Lade.

Make of that what you will. I'm not going to pass judgement, because I haven't seen many Port Adelaide games this year.

He is a good chaser, and good at putting defensive pressure on an opponent and ‘cornering’ them for use of a better term. Probably not the best tackler and his tackling style needs some work.
