Not sure if this has been posted or if any of you guys heard it, but Thursty was on the Run home coz of his Rising star nomination.
He said that he was surprised coz he didnt have a good game against the G Train.
He also said he's playing at 83 kgs and that the fitness staff have said that they only want him up to 88 kgs! No more than that, otherwise he loses athleticism. Would that be enough to take on the monster forwards of the AFL? I would've thought 90-95 kgs but apparently they're going for 88 kgs.

Also mentioned that Mad monday started at 1:30pm and Chris Newman was the first one to pull up stumps at 5pm!!!! WEAK!!! :D Also said that Trent Knobel was the hardest drinker at the club..

There are fewer and fewer monster forwards in the AFL. Gehrig has quit, Neitz and Rocca won't be far behind. Reiwoldt and Fevola rely on mobility and pace. Hall and Lucas are 30. Training up a guy to play on Lynch and Brown twice a year might not be too smart. Franklin ain't no monster, he is a Richo clone who runs around all day.

Thursfield might lose 1-2 wrestling matches but you accept that if he can show pace on the lead, can match Tarrant / Reiwoldt when the run around on the wing, and can spoil from a running jump. The number of wrestling contests is fewer and fewer as those forwards vanish and teams are more and more reluctant to bomb long to a contest.

There's a guy called Tom Hawkins who looks like terrorising us in years to come. Watching him v's Coburg on the weekend and cannot believe how big this kid really is.

How much did the AFL full back of the century weigh?

EDIT: Just checked myself and he was 95kg. Didn't think he was that heavy.

I think THursty is better being the agile one and we should hope Pears or Rance slips to pick17, Pears far more likely to than Rance btw, but they're already both bigger than Thursty and McGuane which makes a better base for them to grow and let Thursty and McGuane be our agile guys.

I think the other thing here is that Polak is a pretty big unit, and I am surprised that he has not played on some of these bigger guys.

Polak's conditioning on arrival at Punt road was ****ing disgraceful. ****ing Freo. :thumbsd:

Im sure he will start to next year but despite him looking strong, he 's no better than Thursty in holding his ground. Infact Thursty is better.

Polak has the guns but he needs the core. He'll get there.

For people who think I'm negative all the time...here you go...
I love Thursty.

You want to shred me on this opinion....feel free.
That's why we have this board.

Cheers

Don't let it get to ya, it's not your fault that a majority of threads are about the poorer footballers on our list. If there were more threads on Thursty, Edwards, Jack, Lids, Newman or Foley etc people would be calling you, and others, an optomist.

Darren Glass
191cm 97kg

Matthew Scarlett
192cm 95kg

Will Thursfield
191cm 83kg

The only thing I can say is...they probably want him to goto 88kg in the off season and play at that weight..then slowly increase over the next 2 years.

Think about it..you can't go straight from 83kg to 93kg. It just puts too much strain on your body.

Thursfield is a "Dustin Fletcher" clone.

His strengths lie in his athleticism and and his closing speed .

Play to your strengths IMHO ;)

Remember Frawley "Bulking up" Richo and standing him in the goalsquare ? ... i can still hear those hamstrings twanging .... Richo is like an antelope , born to run and jump , they tried to f..k with that formula and failed .

Shrewd to hone Thursty`s strengths

It sounds as if 88kgs is it and not going any higher. He admitted that he needs to rely on his closing speed and just get a fist in - so he has to play off his man a lot.

He has that great closing speed, but also a huge leap. Both would be damaged by too much bulk. I am just thrilled that he has maintained both coming back from a knee. I was frightened that he wouldn't be able to turn, jump or sprint. So that is a huge highlight of the year for me.

The other thing is that we will want him to become more of a rebounder and counter-attacker. The best way to hurt Hawkins and co will be wandering down the end snagging a goal or two of his own.

Yes, he said he asked wallace to put him in the forward line each week coz he hasn't kicked a goal yet, but it has happened!

shades of duncan kellaway when he snags his first one?

Hopefully it won't be that long :)

I think Thursfield has lacked some self belief and confidence.

Even early this season he wouldn't leave the defensive-50. Seemed frightened to run off his man. Was like an ancient explorer who didn't want to sail too far from home in case he fell off the edge of the world.

He was also overly deliberate and jerky with his kicking. You could almost see him running through a checklist in his mind as he was super-careful about not making a mistake.

By the end of the season his kicking was more natural, he was running more. Getting forward of centre. Instead of just bowing to the experience Bowden and shoveling off the easy handball he was actually making position and calling for the footy.

At Sandringham as a kid they really used him a lot as a go to guy. He was a big part of their run from defence and a guy they tried to get the ball to. It was that side of his game that caught my eye. So there is potential for huge improvement as he gains self-belief and builds his fitness base. He may never be a Matthew Scarlett - but he should try to be, he has it in him.

Just needs to learn to keep his kicks down a bit and stop floating them a metre above everyone's head.

I think that's what clinched the nomination for him. He showed throughout the season he was a good stopper, but in those last couple of games he started to provide some run out of the backline and set up some plays. Although Thursfield may have thought the last game was one of his worse games, it was in many ways also one of his most promising games because of those extra things he was starting to show.
