THE AFL has launched an investigation into an apparent time clock blunder in the dying minutes of Saturday's thrilling Gold Coast-Fremantle game at Metricon Stadium.

The apparent error came with 7:55 remaining on the clock in the final term, with Gold Coast leading the match 81-76.

After a ball-up in the middle of the ground, the clock remains on 7:55 for 39 seconds.

There was no scoring in this period.

Not good to see - but doesnt effect the 4 points as freo were still up by a point with 39 second remaining.

Does anyone remember the outcome when that st kilda game went overtime because the umpires didnt hear the siren?

CC raged at the AFL and got the 4 points.

Excellent. Another umpire error for our history books. Won't match sirengate for drama, or the umpire marking the ball for comedy, but contributes to the quantity and sense of history.

What about the one where ( cant remember who we were playing) the opposition kicked a point from a free kick and had the choice of kicking again or taking the point....

It was actually Matt Carr who had the ping and the ump asked his direct opponent (Carr was dumped just as he kicked it) whether Carr should have another shot or let the behind count, naturally he told the umpy to let the behind stand. Was astounding.

The genre that one should sit in is between Musical Theatre and Three Ringed Circus. I'm leaning to Three Ringed Circus given the clowns involved.

Was at that game, it was v Essendon ( can't remember which year), but what a friction' shambles of an umpiring decision, duh!!!

Well, I guess after getting the result changed following Sirengate, we can't have it both ways. Still get the 4 points.

Of course, probably have to weigh this against how the teams might have played differently during the last few moments. Not that it seemed to me that anyone played defensively and tried to protect a lead.

Agree it is ridiculous that these errors happened. Now it makes sense why I was yelling 'BLOW THE SIREN!' so much.

"FREMANTLE IN FRONT BY 1 PT WITH 39 SECONDS REMAINING

GOAL Mzungu (Frem) 0:01, GC 87 Frem "

so are they planning on revising the score to show we won by a point, not 7 points? interesting considering sirengate. imagine if we were 1 point down. ffs. what a joke.

The way they've laid it out it looks like it doesn't it.

I don't think they'll look change anything though unless GC officially call for it. I'm pretty sure they've picked these sorts of discrepancies up before and not altered the final score. It's really a bit unjust to do so unless the time added was absolutely the final moments where cause and effect can be conclusively shown (eg. Sirengate).

We can have it both ways because they're different situations.

Like Papa says there's been quite a few incidents of timekeeping errors over the years and they've never retrospectively altered the score.

Fair bit different to the siren actually sounding to end the game and everyone* hearing it except the ump.

*well, some of our players anyway

It is unbelievable that, in 2012, these sorts of things are still happening. A couple of seconds maybe, but 39 sec in a game that could have been decided by a goal?

Good that the time keepers were stood down.

*sigh* move on to next week and never talk about it again...... ha

I appreciate what you're saying, but it does get complicated when a decision has to be made about whether the extra time had an impact on the outcome. I don't see any clear solution for when (not if) these stuff ups happen agin.
