Over the last few years, I guess most Freo supporters including myself were hopeful that our list would one day seriously challege for a premiership... it's now time to realise our list is far from that and we won't win a premiership with our current batch of players.

Our coaching staff probably have to accept some of the blame but in reality our playing squad is just not up to scratch with the top few squads.

Problems start in the midfield... we have no clear ball winners and no-one that can break the lines with the exception of 1 or 2 players. When you look at our midfield, the only one with real pace is Peake and perhaps Crowley. It became extremely evident last week against the Bulldogs when their players would surge through the midfield while we couldn't play continuous football at all.

People say the majority of our midfielders are one dimensional, can only play well when our team is up and going and when the conditions suit, and it is completely true. With all respects to our players, we are never going to really improve with players like Cook, Walker, McManus, Schammer, M Carr etc running through the center and I'm even tempted to throw Hasleby and Bell's names in there.

There is no confidence in our midfield group hence players are always second to the ball and play really reactively instead of proactive instinctive footy.

Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of quality players and a decent nucleus but we need to make some significant changes to our playing list and perhaps our coaching panel as well before we can expect some significant improvements. It might be a case of taking a step back before taking another step forward.

Like I said in another thread, I think we need some major changes in both the playing list and coaching staff. I don't think the coahing staff have been able to properly ultilise many players to the best of their ability and back them to do things they are most capable of. Too consistently game plans are being implemented where the coaching staff are backing the wrong players to play the roles instructed (eg Schammer).

I agree with you on the midfeild. We need to start our recruiting focus on building it up (like the Eageles are doing) so it is up to scratch on a consistent basis.

I take a slightly different view. I'll admit that maybe its not a premiership quality list (but when you look at individuals in the lists of Adelaide, eagles or sydney - are they really that good?).

Fremantle show that they have quality players who can play quality football when they are motivated - we beat the eagles earlier this year - a few no interstate team has acheived since 2004, and we're still the only team to beat them in 2006. The problem is that we don't have a coach who can motivate them for the 'normal' games. The players motivate themselves for derbies, but they need help for the other games - this is part of what coaches are supposed to do.

They don't want to play for Connolly, plain and simple. The best way to improve their performance is to get a coach who they are prepared to play for.

Kenny I hear you.

Crowley has no pace. He is slow.

We need to Draft midfielders. We have made the wrong decision when chosing who to draft. Too many midsize backmen and KPP's.

Players who are expendable are, Cook, M Carr, Walker, McManus, Schammer, Dunn, Webster, Gilmore. These guys have little trade value.

This is my two cents,

in 2008 this is how our team should appear.

TBW= to be won

Hayden Grover Thornton

Mundy McPharlin Drum

TBW Haselby TBW

Headland Pavlich TBW

Medhurst Longmuir TBW

RUCK: Warnock TBW JCarr

Bench: Dodd Crowley Polak TBW

Another big body in the backline is desirabe but not essential. Johnson is not as good as people say he is.

We went over this a few weeks ago and I posted something similar in a similar thread by Wizard. http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4944376&postcount=8

I don't think we need to bottom out, we just need to trade are most abundant commodities. KPP's, Half back flankers and Slow midfielders. Then pick up what we need, Midfielders young and talented. Do not need to be AFL ready.

jesus, baby with the bathwater or what...
Johnson? You must be effen kidding... I can only think of 2 maybe 3 games this where he hasn't won his possie...
Warnock is a twig and probably won't be regular for another 2 years...
I also have a bad feeling that J-Lo's time has passed, because of that dickie knee...lets hope the same can't be said of Hasleby although it may if he plays in his current condition much more

Walker is SOFT and must go...
Cook, I dunno what the hell he was doing on Ablett anyway, but possibly
McManus, there's life in those legs and the new guys could learn something about hardness and guts from him.
Gilmore - Gone
Webster - Gone
Schammer - ???? Skills coach needed
M. Carr is a passenger
R Dunn - ?? Who knows...too many injuries.

Unfortunately, after today, it looks like we may have seen the last of Sir Robert, you poor bugger

First game back from a broken cheekbone, has looked good until now.

Geelong got beaten by Collingwood in Rd 8 by 102 points, are they just not very good?
The Bulldogs got beaten by Adelaide by 77 points in Rd 5.
The Tigers have been beaten twice by more than 100 points this year.
At the moment, the Dogs are 51 points up on Brissy, in Brissy. Are Brissy just not very good?

They are within 1 game of us on the ladder (Dogs might be 2 games ahead soon if they can keep ahead of Brissy).

We are playing crap footy!!! We never even looked like it today
The Bulldogs have played one BAD game and have been playing good footy even when they have lost.
Apart from West Coast and Port and a half game against the Saints whe have been ordinary although we have been winning, mainly because the other teams have been worse..
Today was just about the worst home game I have had to sit through...
22 chooks all looking for a head...
Ooo that last bit was a little rude...

Hasleby hasn't fired a shot. He needs to be dropped not because he isn't in our best 22, but because he isn't worth the huge salary he is being paid. Maybe a kick up the arse is what he need to find some of the form he had in the early part of 2004 ( he signed his multi million dollar contract mid way through 2004)

If you look at Hasleby stats
In 2000 (his first year)
He averaged 21.4 disposals and .7 goals a game
In 2001
He averaged 19.2 disposals and .7 goals a game

In 2005
He he averaged 20.6 disposals and .7 goals a game

This year
He has average 19.2 disposals and .3 goals a game.

First 12 rounds of 2004
He average 27.4 disposals a game

where is Pav for AA when you need him ? I am sure he'llpump up Freo or atleast Mundy

Lions wiped the floor with us and Dishlickers wiping floor with lions.

We are just middle of the road side with some talented individuals.
