I know its probably not the best timing, to start this thread on the eve of the elimination finals, but it really irks me that some players are only in the team because they are fit (cough cough mcveigh)

Football these days seem to reward you with game time, if you have good fitness levels, irrespective of the skill you possess.

if you can run out the game then you'll get selected over someone whose more skillful.

for example it is beyond me how buchanon missed selection yet there was room for players such as mcveigh and matthews.

the way i measure the value of players is if they can do one of three things.
1. set up goals
2. clearances
3. crucial tackles

these are a rarity for both mcveigh and matthews yet because they are fitter than say buchanon, schmidt, and grundy, they'll get selected over these more skillful players.

if we lose on sat night i hope Roos takes the hard line with some players, and tell them you've had your chance!!

ben matthews sadly is a spent force. he's to old and opposition players run past/away from him like he is standing still.

i'd tend to agree, and certainly would've agreed last season, or even part-way through this season, but i reckon he's played some good games the seocnd half, he was very good v the weagles in perth....but having said that, he'd be useful in trade talks, been a great servant but he's getting on, is slowing down and his skills have always been a bit iffy

Matthews reminds me a lot of Shane Parker at the end of last year right now.

He has looked beaten for a while but is playing well now, which will probably cause him to go around again next year instead of retiring. He should hang them up at the end of the year imo.

I'm a fan of McVeigh. I think he has played some pretty decent football. I'd rather Buchanon played than either, but I'm not the coach and I'm sure Roosy has his reasons.

the only logical reason why you'll want mcveigh over buchanan is perhaps mcveigh can run out the game (which i think is a crap criteria). other than that, Buchanan trounces mcveigh in every other facet of the game.

mcveigh is jsut a passenger . He does not have the ability take the game on when the going gets tough.

I guess you didnt watch Round 19 against St Kilda. The result could have been alot different if it wasnt for McVigh's 3 goals. He was the top scorer for the Swans that game, he played better than most of our other players that day.

kicking goals is very important, but it will be an overstatement to say mcveigh won us the match. i would be more inclined to heap praise on the players that did the hard work and passed the footy to him.

futhermore i've watched all swannies games for the past couple of years, and i can't even think of a handful of games which would suggest mcveigh deserves his spot in the side especially when we've got barlow, and schimdt on standby

Dont you think Macveigh has played better since he grew a beard,or am i thinking of someone else?

everyone on these forums is way too critical of mcveigh.

and your 3 facets of the game is just stupid and outdated. the game now requires players to be extremely fit and to run alot further and at higher speeds. you have to be fit to catch the player in order to tackle them, you have to be fit to get to contests.

why doesnt everyone just stand still and we will just play kick to kick.

I was not downplaying the importance of fitness. i was simply saying that their needs to be a balance between fitness and skill when selecting the team, and from my observations, mcveigh is all fitness and liittle skill

I have to agree. I think he is in a similar situation to Bevan in that he came into the seniors very early compared to some of our other youngsters and gets judged harshly on this basis. He is younger than Malceski and Dempster.
