Tippett wanted out of Adelaide. Sure, he went chasing the $$$ when he left, but his primary motivation seems to have been getting away from Adelaide. He's a fairly private individual and couldn't stand the goldfish nature of being a key player at Adelaide, having his face plastered across the Advertiser every week - and the loss of privacy that entailed. Then why didn't we offer him $1mill a year?
It makes no sense for GWS to implement that strategy. It just wastes time and development of one of their young brigade. They will already have the highest picks etc in next year's draft so trying to grab Tippett only to on trade him for something like that is pointless.
Carlton is the only other club I can see taking the risk because it could bring them closer to a flag but even then Malthouse is not one to take massive risks like this and he hates players who have an all about me attitude. I would also question how much room they would have in their cap or even be able to pay. I dare say they may try and pay the min salary cap over the next few years to help save money and pay their $9mill debt.
Sydney might not be home - and they certainly offered the big $$$ - but they are also able to offer him relative anonymity. He'll be able to go to the shops and the beach, without constantly being harassed by well-meaning supporters. That has to have massive appeal to person like him.
We offered him the big $$$ last time. It got him to stay for another 2 years, but at the end of that time he decided it was time to go, no matter what $$$ the AFC were willing to throw at him.
As for why GWS would do it.. haven't you seen the way they've hoarded the compensation "future" draft picks? Tippett is just another way of giving them future first round picks in next year's draft. The fact that they can have him teaching & guiding their younger kids in the art of forward play (albeit not kicking techniques) would also be fairly valuable to them.
