I know the Swans have some sort of allowance to their salary cap, but how on earth can they splash $1 million on a player a day after winning the flag!? That seems super dodgy to me.

When Jolly and Hall left in 2009 (alongside the removal of O'loughlin, Crouch, Barry, and Buchanan) it left a massive gap in the Swans cap and a lot of contracts were re-jogged and heavily front loaded in order to just get over 92.5 payment base. I'd assume some spare would come from that as those contracts would now be in low paying years, some would come from delistings and some would come from a player Sydney would most likely have to trade out.

But then, when it comes to player contracts we're all mushrooms, really.

This is just a horrible equation..
Tippett alone is worth more than Pick #6 and GC's 2nd rounder, though it's probably close to what we'll end up receiving. If you'd stopped there then I wouldn't have objected - but you've thrown McKernan and our 1st round selection into the equation as well. Effectively we're giving these up for no return whatsoever.

I'm not exactly sure how Sydney's Cost of Living allowance works, but if it's not already, it should be spread out evenly across the entire list, and not able to be used in one heap to attract another star player.

I propose scrapping the allowance and giving out food stamps instead.

That's exactly how it is used. It has to be spread out over the full list and explicitly stated as such in our reporting.

Having said that, based on last years figures I don't think we're paying the full 100% of the salary cap. We were pretty close to the minimum 92.5% spend so we're still spending less on our total list than many other teams, even with the CoL included.

Even so, I can't see how we could afford to be paying Tippet the huge salary figures that are being thrown around. It would either be a heavily back-ended contract so that the majority is paid when players like Goodes, ROK and Jude are gone, or as I think is more likely... the rumors about Tippet coming to Sydney are complete BS to bump up his demands.

I'm having a hard time keeping up with this thread so sorry if this is old news. PKeen tweeted that there was no restriction on GWS picking any player in the draft. The 2011 restrictions no longer apply. GWS could take Tippett if he went into the draft. Makes the "Hard ball" GC want to play a little difficult as they could miss out all together.

It's amazing - I was desperately hoping he'd stay, and I'm very disappointed he isn't...

Seems like an arseh*le, the rest of the boys obviously aren't that sad to see the back of him, oh well.

The way he's behaved this week has softened the blow considerably; provided we get something decent in return, I couldn't care less anymore.

Honestly guys, if we think we're going to get pick 6 and a 2nd rounder for tippett (or close to that) its just wishful thinking IMO.

the ABSOLUTE BEST we will get for him (IMO) is pick 8. nothing else. just pick 8.

the most likely outcome (IMO) will be pick 13 or 14 plus a player (probably a scrub that we see potential in).

Yes, i am fully aware he is worth more than that. I think we deserve more than that. I would love more than that.

I think we all just need to understand that due to the fact that we are effectively being bent over a barrel we will not be receiving more than that.

Hopefully my pessimism is proven incorrect.
