I think the desire to go home was significant, as was the desire to escape the fishbowl which is the life of an AFL footballer in Adelaide. The plan to go home (to GC) was interrupted when Sydney made him an offer he couldn't refuse - and he realised that he could live a relatively anonymous life in Sydney while still enjoying the $$$. Game Over.

It will continue to happen time and time again. Hudson and Welsh, Gunston and now Tippett all trades where we have received under in the past 5 years. Other clubs see us as an easy target.

There's a difference between doing things in public and not having a private life. The problem with being an AFL footballer in Adelaide is that they are recognised everywhere they go. There's no escaping it. They go to the shops, they have people wishing them well. They go to the beach, they have people coming up to them to chat. They go to a pub and they have to watch out for wannabe heroes. What sort of a life is that?

BH&G is part of the job. So is going to schools and running an Auskick clinic. He gets paid for that stuff - and paid mighty handsomely at that. He doesn't get paid to be on the clock 24/7, every time he sets foot outside his front doorstep.

I guess the answer to this is that most players cope, build a wall around them, get used to it. There's only 4 clubs in the country that guarantee some sort of anonymity and good luck to Kurt for finally getting to one. Still think he's piss-weak, always will.

The manner in which he's burnt the club is incredible, even to a point where you can see our players are furious. The obvious contempt for Tippett coming out of our club on all levels is overwhelming, and I cant see how Noble etc couldve then tried the re-draft tactic and not looked stupid.

I am of the strong belief whilst everyone is entitled to their privacy this is part and parcel of being a professional athlete in every walk of life. Its part of the reason they are compensated so well.

Actually, there are only 4 teams out of 18 with the same degree of fishbowl syndrome as Adelaide - the SA & WA teams. Players in Qld and NSW can be relatively anonymous. Players in Vic are somewhere in between, due to the number of clubs operating in the same city.

I agree with you though, that there are only 4 clubs in the country which can guarantee the anonymity he craves. I suspect that 3 of them filled the top-3 positions on his wish list when deciding where to go after leaving Adelaide. GWS, understandably, weren't on that wish list.

Wow go away for a couple of hours and we've hit 10,000 woo hoo! Reading every damn one has left a real bad taste in my mouth about how this has been handled by the club.
1. Sando tried to put the team first by saying that Kurt is in our best 22 and whatever he decides he will play. This probably wasn't the best idea.
2. Hindsight is wonderful and we should have traded the spud last year and taken 8 and a set of steak knives from Brisbane.
3. If Tippett does have a mental condition, what's to say after a year in Sydney he requests a trade home as he is "homesick"
4. This shouldn't have dragged all season. The club should have put the hard word on last year and if he couldn't commit trade his ass.
5. The club should never sign any players with Blucher or the firm he works for. They have screwed us right royally.
6. Do we just take 22 and be done? If Sydney screw us over on this deal, they become enemy no 1 in the future and would be seen as such across the league.
7. The club just hasn't handled the PR side of things well again. Trigg hasn't done enough and we might be playing hardball behind the scenes, but in the media it looks like we are soft ****s.

Tippett will be booed by Adelaide supporters for the rest of his career if this deal goes through, he has been a right royal piece of shite and treated the club that gave him his chance at the big bucks with total disrespect.

Well I do my part to avoid the fish-bowl mentality. In my checkout days at glenelg (a.k.a the dark times) I used to serve Crows players all the time. I always avoided bringing up footy with them. These people just want their milk and eggs, leave them alone. (I did make one exception when I served Michael Doughty after the 2009 prelim. He looked totally shattered and I couldn't help but wish him well.)

For star players, the media is a double-edged sword. You can't make big TV money and then complain when your over-exposed. So I would be considerably less sympathetic towards them. On the other hand the other 90% of players who aren't profiteering from the media probably just wan't to focus on the job and not be bothered in their off time.

Seriously? How many people would recognise the #3 batsman for SA if they bumped into him walking down the street? They might recognise players who have represented Australia, but players who only ever reach Shield level are almost anonymous. They get 3000 spectators to a game (Shield, not T20) and the games aren't even on FTA TV.

What you say only holds true for the very elite athletes - those competing at an international level, in a popular sport. Football is the exception. It's players at the club level who are recognised walking down the street, not just the players in the AA team, but right down to player #30 on each and every team list.
