As someone who is a manager of a state department and involved in strategic decision making IRL, IMHO this was either a brilliant or awful strategic decision.
We'll only be able to make that call once the commission hands out their penalty in a week and a half, as is the case with just about every strategic decision.
I personally think it was a brilliant move - assuming they have had lengthy discussions with the AFL prior to this announcement regarding what sort of ballpark our penalty would be (which I have no doubt is true). Let's hope we just cop a $500K fine in addition to the picks we've forfeited and the lack of compensation we've missed out on by not being able to trade Tippett, we can then move on as a club.

As much as I think Trigg has been a very good CEO for a number of years, if it comes out that he has mislead the board regarding the agreement made back in 09 then there is no way that he should keep his job. Nothing personal but if I had made that call in my place of employment the I would expect to be sacked straight away.
As has been previously posted by others, I think that they don't want to remove him prior to the commission hearing.

So... let me get this right last week we ask for an extension to make sure we can prepare a defense and the get the right outcome, and today we admit we are guilt and hand out our own punishment?

perhaps with your crystal ball and supreme prescience you will be able to tell us how our next three years will pan out, or perhaps we should call for...

What part of my post are you saying this applies to? As a direct result of our own administration's actions, we have lost one of our best players for nothing, having turned down deals of value in previous years. There was also losing Bock, the opportunity cost of keeping Tippett by this dodgy deal 3 years ago. And now we've copped a draft sanction (albeit self imposed).

All I am saying is that the people responsible need to be held accountable, regardless of the outcome of the AFL hearing. Do you disagree? And what does Captain Hindsight have to do with anything, besides being a cute meme which doesn't really apply here?

If this is our only penalty then all good. We add Crouch, top 3, and upgrade Laird, possible late first rounder. Quality additions.

We still get a look at rookie draft.

I'm assuming for present purposes that only a fine to come. It's a negotiation process and we need to offer something. This way we have the appearance of offering plenty when in reality we have not been hurt too badly.

A smart , strategic, move

And if anyone thinks we did this without legal advice they've got rocks in their head.

There are multiple charges. If it goes as I hope it will some will be dismissed and in exchange we will plead to one or more on the basis of an agreed penalty.

We're still going to get punished. There's no way the AFL will let us go without whacking us somehow. They would look weak. This won't be enough for them to let the matter lie.

Jenny, I admire your spirited defence of our CEO, all 1,000 posts..."

I hope that doesn't end up as a headline in the papers. Everything else you've written has.

$501 to replace Trigg as CEO...don't Sportsbet have better things to do?

Exactly. We have now, as a result of this whole shambles (of which we had full knowledge all along), lost Tippett for nothing, we have lost whatever compensation we would have been given by the AFL if he'd signed for GC as an uncontracted player if we hadn't used these underhanded means of keeping him, we've lost Bock as an uncontracted player who GC would not have had access to if Tippett had gone, we didn't get Brisbane's 2011 pick 8 which was on the table for him, we didn't get Sydney's 2012 pick 23 or anything else in trade week for him, which was massively unders anyway, now we have lost pick 20 and pick 54.

And for what? A record season-opening losing streak which ensured 2010 was over before it started. Our worst season ever in 2011. And a gallant 2012 campaign which still didn't break our now decade and a half long Grand Final drought which is only matched by competition heavyweights Richmond, Fremantle and the Bulldogs.

Even if we are handed no further sanction by the AFL (which I severely doubt) and there is a compelling explanation which shows that the AFC were really just innocent bystanders in all of this (which is even less likely), any administration and football department which lets happen what has already happened must be held accountable.

If there are not some serious changes in personnel and club structure which show that the club is serious about accountability, transparency and most importantly giving the blokes on the field the best possible chance of finally lifting some silverware, I will not bother renewing my membership next year. I never thought it would get to this point.
How has this changed from yesterday? Losing our 1st and 2nd picks this year? Hardly the end of the world. Again, not renewing membership for off field stuff really doesn't sit well with me.

Again, exactly! Have issues with Trigg, Harper Reid - WHOEVER, but don't take it out on the Club. Now, more than ever, they NEED YOUR SUPPORT. The boys need to know that we are still behind them. Send letters to the Board, ring in to radio complaining, but please, do not withhold your support for our boys.

He's still got friends in sydney, though maybe not amongst the players ;)

Apparently not. Heard a whisper on the vine today that there are some VERY unhappy players with the old Tipster throughout the AFL - but particularly at Sydney.

This attitude shits me as do the groupies who like it when ever someone brings it up. It has nothing to do with ****ing hindsight.

When a team cheats the salary cap, can they rely on hindsight if they dont win the flag or get busted? We entered into a dodgy deal, we ****ed up.

Last year there were some of us stating if there was an agreement to do the trade to Brisbane. The club made the wrong call and now posters like you think its okay because in hindsight things might have worked out differently. Well guess what? They didnt, they ended up as many of us feared, ****ed up.
