A lot of knee-jerkers are on his case right now. I object!

He kicked more goals than any other player in the second half of the season (when he actually got games), he tried hard all day in the GF (and kicked a couple) and he never looked like he gave up.

He's only played 23 or so games.

Face it- guys like him, Gamble and Hawkins are our future key forwards (if Nathan had have stayed, we would look great for the future). Better get used to him because I have a feeling he's gonna be around for a long time.

Agreed. :thumbsu: Hawkins had his chance at the start of the year and ran out of puff.

Lonergan has been good for us, and he certainly didn't cost us the game yesterday.

The thing that shitted me the most...... Lonners seems to have been wearing tho same shit-house plactic boots for ages.......how many time does he have to slip over before he changes them to somthing else ???

he wasnt the only one doing that to.........

*(not going to say much more....still not happy)*

Lonergan did nothing against the Dogs and Hawks during the season and during the finals. He will NOT be a forward that helps us win a Premiership. That is fact.

Neither did Mooney Chapman, Johnson, Stokes...

So why single out Lonergan?

Neither did Mooney. Stokes an Varcoe also barely turned up all finals. He was not worse than Mooney in the GF. SJ also perhaps who despite getting a shit load of the ball did stuff all with it and had no impact.

Stokes i agree with, but Chapman during the year stepped up in big games, as did Mooney and Johnson.

Hell, Mooneys game wasnt that awful yesterday, the issue was his accuracy. He took the marks and more times then not was in the right spot.

Stokes was awful, and he shouldnt have been in ahead of Gamble, Wojak and Byrnes, all of whom would have done SOMETHING.

Lonergan came into a side running into form and winning by 60+ points every week. I love what the man has achieved over the past year but I don't understand why people claim he is a key forward. Whilst he is tall he doesn't crash packs and only plays well as a lead up player.

Whilst Hawkins is going to make his presense felt next year, I think Gamble is a suitable replacement for Lonergan. Gamble has the ability to play the lead up role of Lonners and he also has a massive leap.

Congratulations to Tom, however unless he can revitalise his game and become a high marking forward that can play well even when the service isn't lined with gold, he is going to struggle to make the team next year.

Couldn't agree more.
Have nothing but admiration for the guy "plus" he's had a pretty fair season, but isn't the type to take us to a Premiership IMO, a handy "spare parts" player next year with hopefully Hawkins stepping into the full forward roll.

i agree and was saying this a month ago, but was just derided as being negative.

he is a good kick for goal, but against quality opposition he struggles to get his hands on the ball in marking contests.

he better not be the next KK.......if he turns out like KK and the club stick him at FF all of next year...im hanging myself.....

After reading your post I was just thinking to myself which one i'd rather have at FF.....not good.

I hope Vegas & Hawkins step up next year coz i'd hate to see a KK clone.

this bloke is going to be a very solid AFL player, and he definitely wasnt the worst on saturday...the bloke's played very minimal games and is only going to continue to improve...

saying that gamble is a better and more suitable player than tom is ridiculous. whilst i like gamble as well, i find it hard to believe that he would have contributed any more on the weekend...lonners got us off to a fantastic start and set the ball rolling on how to kick the ball straight...the others just did not follow

He's been our highest scoring forward since he's been playing...and he's only played 23 games.

I don't think there are many 23 gamers that can be superstars, which is what most people on this forum expect of their players.

What we should be looking at is the form of our senior players, who really should shoulder the blame for the disaster on the weekend.

I'm not too fussed about Lonergan's performance on the weekend. To be truthful I think Varcoe put in the most disgraceful performance on the day (he looked injured). The point is, whilst Longergan was valuable in the sense he kicked plenty of goals, I dont think we can rely on him as a full forward for long. The role of a full forward is to take contested marks and to compete when a pack forms to bring the ball to ground in and around the goal face. Mooney is positioned at CHF as a lead up player, but Lonergan is currently playing more like a CHF. Also, why isn't Gamble more suitable? Not only can he crumb goals, take marks on the lead, but he also has the ability to jump high and provide a contest deep in the forward line.

Good observation. It bears repeating that the future forward line of the Cats is going be consist of Hawkins, Lonergan and Gamble. Let's get behind the team and the suits at KP and hope the emphasis on development gets the best out of these men.

Yes, Varcoe looked quite injured I thought.
