Was playing the ball.
Incidental contact was made.
It happens.
You can play the ball and still get rubbed out.

And players have been getting rubbed out for what were initially deemed legal tackles.

What is "incidental contact"?

It was medium impact to the head and caused injury. It was either reckless or negligent.

If it had been an elbow and not a foot that split Dahlhaus's lip, we'd be having a different conversation.

Why is a foot to the face deemed misconduct, whereas the collision with an elbow or a fist gets graded?

From his prior history, Toby Greene is likely to get a 1 week suspension for rough conduct and high contact, bleeding injury.

Honestly though, can't anybody see the patterns lately?
Dahl got up and jogged off the ground - a fine or 1 week off to Greene.
If Dahl lied on the ground unconscious for a few minutes - 2 weeks off
If Dahl ended up concussed with a depressed fracture - 3-4 weeks
If Dahl ended up in a 3-day coma - 5 weeks off

It's got nothing to do with the act anymore, but the medical reports.
I needed to quote myself, because this is currently the most applicable pattern from what I can see in any head injuries, accident or intentional. Medical reports, people! Medical reports!

Ziebel is an idiot tho. He should have used the foot and kicked Joseph in the face. $1000 fine - not 4 weeks.

Ziebell has been pinned a couple of times for similar incidents.
Have thought all of the suspensions have gone against the Australian Football ethos, but I digress

Yep we see players receive handballs in this style all the time.

To say it was an accident and he didn't mean to put the spriggs of his boots into dahlaus's face is just plain blind.

I have watched a lot of footy over the years and can't really recall a player leaping head high with a pushing leg action to try and receive a handball.
It was a fend of to the face with the boot that caused injury and what that incurs from the MRP is just a fine I guess.
Will an elbow fend of splitting a lip get the same, or a fist fend of etc etc

Now that kicking players accidently in the face is legal, we'll see a lot of goose-stepping about the footy ground. Players will have their wrists held while they get accidently booted in the face. Hours will be spent unlearning the sling tackle, and learning the-accidental-boot-to-the-head. :D

Look I can understand the justification for the decision, but this just does not pass the pub test.
Rules will be changed to fix this at end of season. I rekon you can lock that one in thanks eddie.

And yes it was a free kick given for high contact
