From The Adelaide Board:

He is 21 years of age, 192cm, and is a key forward playing in the SANFL for Glenelg. Spent two years on Geelong’s rookie list before being cut last season, a move which had many Cat fans questioning the decision. He is very athletic; recorded 8.11 seconds for the agility run which was in the top 5% for his draft camp. Also ran 11 minutes 6 seconds for the 3 kilometer trial, a good result for a tall forward.

Has exceptionally good hands and is a great contested mark. Has a lovely kick and likes to lead hard up the ground. Let’s rookie him.

Yeah I think Cats fans were bit disappointed he got cut but they just didn't have anyone to delist so they could promote him. I think he kicked 50 goals in the VFL last year- fair effort for a 20 year old. Wouldn't mind giving him a shot.

Any takers now? Was very good again today.

Has an exceptional pair of hands and has the ability to take the ball while it’s at it’s highest point meaning it’s almost impossible to defend. Kicked 50+ goals for the year and at 21 has a lot to offer. What impresses me most is that he is a VERY aggressive player who has a presence about him. When the ball is in his area you know he’ll make a contest and do his best to keep it in the area. That tackle in the first quarter near the wing was pretty amazing, one of the hardest tackles I've seen in ages. And he put on a massive bump too. He provides a great target across the forward line and often pushes hard up the ground. He’s a true CHF who has a tremendous work rate and is really exactly what we need.

Would only cost us a rookie pick, but I'd take him in the PSD. Ready to play, is AFL standard and is what we lack.

Appears to be someone that the Melbourne recruiters should be taking a look at. I think that he may be worth a late draft pick or possibly via PSD. We have no KPF at the minute and he is definitely young enough at 21. It seems that his field kicking isn't the best but he is FF / CHF with above average goal kicking percentage, so his field kicking isn't as important.

Any thoughts?

I've only seen him a couple of times for the Geelong reserves and he didn't stand out too much, but he may have developed his game since then.

He did have a good pair of hands though, and like you say his kicking wasn't fantastic.

If we picked him up, it would be pretty speculative, but I wouldn't mind us taking a punt on a young KPF with some ability. After all, we only have Juice and Miller capable of playing that role, and Juice has a long way to go.

I don't think Newton will make it. He is to lazy & has no second effort.

Grima sounds like another stop gap option for the Adelaide forward line. Also correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it Drummond who sang Messen's praises when most other crows supporters said how horrible he is.

He played Tassie VFL with my brother, was good at vfl level but as seen while at geelong isnt really good enough to make it as an afl player.

One player from tassie who defiently could have and should have been drafted in my opinion was a small foward by the name of Ian Callinan, such great skills and reads the play well.

Yes agree with you about Callinan should of been drafted a few years ago now he deserved a crack at AFL level, I just think his height scared most people off.

He is a good player but the reason he didn't get drafted was because he is so small. He wcouldn't be any taller than 170 cm.

As for Grima, I still think we could do worse with a late pick.

Sounds like a decent option, especially with our dearth of KP forwards and, if we take Watts, a fella like Grima could be a bit of a stop-gap while Watts develops.

Agree. He's definately the 'type' we need more of. If he can provide a suitable foil for our forwardline if/while we have Watts developing, I'd be content with picking him up late on. Certainly there'd be no harm in having him train with us over the pre-season?

Id pick him up late in the draft on pre season draft, Give him 2 years to see if he can play and if not delist him. Its not as though he will be taking up the spots of younger players because we have no one in our forward line

I agree that he'd be worth picking up, but the issue might be that we might not have room for him. While i agree that he won't be taking someone space on the field as we're lacking forward options, he might be taking up someones spot on our list.

We've not lost that many players this year, so after we elevate Wona we're left with 5 spots. Picks 1, 17, 19, 35. There goes 4 more spots.

So it might come down to the decision of taking a chance on a player in the PSD or elevating Valenti

And ever day of the week you would leave Valenti on the rookie list, don't get me wrong I like him and think that he deserves another year and some game time to prove that he can make it, because he showed some aggression and put his head over it more than most of our players this year, but leaving him on the rookie list is the smart option.

Hopefully the club can justify paying out Carroll as well, they have no problems paying out under-performing expensive CEOs, they should be able to find the cash to pay for another first year player (60-70k???). That's all it will cost because whether he is on the list or not we are still paying Carroll for nothing.

Yeah, Carroll's spot is becoming quite critical for our options. Does anyone know what is going on in that respect? Did he come out clean from the Holland thing? Either way I agree that the extra 60k - 70k is worth it if it means an extra tall KPF to take a punt on.

im pretty sure that we will delist a couple more if trade week cant move them on...,

I agree with this, but can't see the point of leaving him there unless he is still able to push for senior selection. Having him either being blanketed by a heavy tag or dominating at Sandy for another season isn't going to do much for him. If we are able to nominate a rookie due to not having two players on the veterans list, then that's the path I'd take with Shane.

I agree, even if it's not in the PSD i'd rather leave him there for another year and take another kid in the draft, even if it's at pick 51.

Valenti will get his chances next year (i'm pretty confident after this year we'll have at least 1 player on the LTI), if he doesn't then he needs to really star in the VFL. I think he may have done enough this year to deserve promotion, but because of the space needed on our list he'll be unlucky.

Who then? i don't doubt that if we can't trade anyone we might delist a few more, but i just have no idea who. Carroll may be paid out, but other then that i'm at a loss

That was me, and that was mainly because he played at my SANFL club for 3 years and had become a favourite of mine. Last year when you guys landed Meesen I said he needed to work on his intensity and hardness and if that improved he could become a player in the Josh Fraser mould. It seems those aspects haven’t improved, at all, and now I have massive concerns whether he’ll make it. Seems he won’t.

As for Grima, people are so quick to write off guys who are a little older than the teenagers taken in the draft. He’s 21, hardly old, and as I keep saying, it's at this age when most key forwards only start making an impact anyway. So it’s not like he’s over the hill, he’s 21, ready to go, and I am confident he could be successful at the highest level because he’s such a great athlete, has a tremendous work rate and his marking is superb. He's worth a shot, will only cost a rookie pick, what's the worst that could happen? He doesn't make it, big deal, most rookies don't survive longer than a year anyway. At best he becomes a handy key forward capable of pushing up the ground or play close to goal.
