Now that Scarlett has been suspended I thought I'd start a thread talking up Gillies.

From what little I've seen of him, I'm quite bullish about his prospects.

His attributes read like a Scarlett bio

a) 192cm
b) wiry
c) fast
d) keeps his feet
e) hits targets
f) likes to counter attack

One thing that won't resemble Scarlett is his opportunity to play AFL. Scarlett played 21 games in his third year. Gillies will be lucky to play half a dozen this year.

Hope he's selected to play against Freo.

I'm really in no position to comment on Tom cos I've only seem him a couple of times and he failed to impress on those occasions. He has been at the club for a few years now only having a handful of games. Perhaps that's largely due to us having a solid back half which has been hard to break into.

I'm keen to see the younger players exposed to the rigors of elite level footy in a blended way.So I'd like to see him given an opportunity. I'll be interested in hearing what those who've watched him closely have to say cos from the few times I've seen him I'm not sure he'll cut it as a key position player at the elite level.

I thought he was pretty impressive when he got a few games in a row during 2009. Haven't seen much of his work in the VFL, but he seems to regularly get in the best at that level.

I'd like to see him in.

Who else can they select? You don't want to change team balance and replace scarlett with a mid.

They probably will go;

Scarlett - Ling
Selwood - Chapman.

And push a runner down back.

I'd like to keep it a little quicker at subi and do this

Scarlett - Gillies
Selwood - Chapman.

Scarlett wasn't taking a key post anyway.

Milburn to come onto the field to replace him as a medium defender.

Selwood out. Ling and Chapman in.

Menzel the sub.

Yeah I saw you mention that in another thread SJ.
I just think it slows us.

And then the following week we'll do something like bring in scarlett and Pods, drop kids, and slow again.

Slowing the team 1% each week will eventually get us.

Last week I thought our fitness, leg speed, and youth got us over the line.
It's probably even more critical over there.

And FWIW, it's great scarlett didn't have a key post.
Don't give one to Gillies either. Don't tie him down. Just let him run, run, run.

Gillies is too soft we need a real hard nut!!!!!!!

Dave I'll have to pull you up there. He may be slowish or not vertically adept but to say that he is soft is a very harsh comment on the guy. For me any guy that steps across the line has guts. I haven't seen enough of him to say that his lack of physical presence is a problem.

I think he was being sarcastic.

Don't think they'll bring in Gillies this week but the boy can play. May not end up as a key defender though. Obviously H is set at CHB but the interesting one is Lonners. He doesn't fit into many posters best 22's but has lifted his game a bit each year to obviously impress the coach and selectors.

Interesting to see how he goes this year and what opportunities Gillies will get in 2011.

Some one must have see something last year for him to get a new contract to the end of 2013.
Better edit that Lonners 2013

I think it's pretty clear from the yearbook article that Gillies went backwards by trying to play through injury (he was one of only 2 or 3 to play every vfl game IMO) so we shouldn't read a lot into the year. He did show some promising signs in 09, so hopefully he shows some more this year. From what I've seen, there's some good atrributes to work with, but his NAB Cup game showed he has a fair way to go. But let's just see what unfolds and not jump all over him yet.

The clear exception to Scarlo is that when Gillies gets front position he concedes it with just enough time for his opponent to out mark him. He did it constantly during the NAB cup and it infuriated me no end.

He does not impress me as a KP defender at all.
