He was an emergency recently which indicates he wasn't far off, although i've not seen anything on the field to suggest he's any closer to selection than he was 18 months ago.

I was a big rap for Tom's footy brain and work ethic in the juniors, but the transition hasn't been easy for him.
He is effectively a flanker in the body of a KPP.
His lack of strength and marking skills were pretty much hidden at junior level as the majority of his opponents were smaller than him, thus he simply used his height to outmark them rather than any particular skill.

It's a shame he hasn't made the transition all that well, but i still hold out hope that he'll find the key before it's too late.

.

yeah, i went to school with him and he was no stand-out for assumption. he was good, but was shaded by perfomances from bo nixion and ryan crawford. i was surprised that he got drafted actually. were his performances much better at calder than for a.c.k?

Whose position would he take, Phat?

If played to his strengths, he'd be competing with Charlie Gardiner, Dessy Haynes and to a lesser extent Andrew Mackie.

Never saw him play for Assumption, but he had a good solid year for Calder in 2002.
He played for Vic Country that year and was seen as one of the more promising talls in the draft.

Fair to say though that he drafted more on potential then performance.

Always thought he was the 'forward in progress'. Now that he's playing defence, I guess he probably doesn't fit that category.

I really hope he becomes a good KPP for us in the future. I assume he would be getting close to a game. Has been playing pretty well in the 2's.

There was actually a little feature on Tom in todays Herald Sun.

Unfortunately i don't think it's online anywhere, but it was basically a puff piece with quotes from Kevin Sheahan about Tom's talents and why it's taken him so long to develop.

I know he's competing against Callan & Egan and in the short term Sanderson but I think he would be an excellent 3rd man floater backman - similar to Bizzell, Teague etc...

I think he'll make the transition eventually.

I gather you're referring to spots in the 22, disregarding team balance and positions.

Callan and Sanderson are primarily rebounding small defenders, whilst Egan is very much a pure key position defender.

Lonergan is neither.

At 197cm. and matchstick thin when drafted Tom was alway's going to be a long term project player when drafted.

Still need's to add another 5 or 6 kgs. to his frame. Would definately keep him on the list as he look's like he could fill a void if required as a tall down forward or back (similar to H in previous season's.).
