Was listening to last night's game on K-Rock, and someone was saying that there is a rumour going around that should we win the grand final next week, Tom Lonergan will retire, as they feel that Lonners has given it all he has to get back after his injury, a la Jason McCartney after the Bali bombings.

Has anyone else heard this, and do you think there's any truth behind it?

I cannot see how in any way this could ever be possible, with Lonergan playing career-best footy and has been our leading goalkicker since he has been in the side.

Mooney has a couple of years left at best and I can see Lonergan alongside Hawkins in the future.

Hard to believe, but who knows, it was mighty courageous of him to get back, and I would've thought that'd be the hardest part for him and that it would get easier as he goes on. That said, no one could take anything away from him for hanging them up, he's a courageous bloke that gives his all.

Something makes me think of an interview someone did with him that was done on Ch7 or Ch10 that makes me think otherwise about Tommy and that he is as keen about his footy as anyone. Everything's gone his way this year with Nathan pulling out the FF spot fell into his lap if he was willing to work hard for it, and he has and I doubt he'll be giving it up anytime soon.

Pffft....SEN - Radio's equivalent of A current affair when it comes to credible journalism:thumbsd:

Did you bother reading the entire OP ?
Mitho mentioned on K-Rock that he'd heard the rumour, but doubted it to be true.Nobody mentioned SEN.

It doesn't mean he was wrong about SEN

I recall a recent interview with Lonergan where he himself said he wanted to cement his place in the side and get on with his career, after all the "It's a great story" media swarming dies down. Not really indicative of a man about to pull the pin, but who knows what he'll feel if/when he has a premiership medallion around his neck?

Just wondering what you guys are hearing down Geelong way.talking to a couple of people today who were saying that the whisper is that if Chappy comes back that Tom Lonergan may go out.
I know there is no room at all for sentiment in Grand Finals, but Gee that would be a tough call for Bomber.
Certainly would put Blake in the shade. I notice he has tailed off a little bit,but hopefully they stick with him.
Good luck for the game.

Those people obviously know nothing about football then, Rodney, as we would then only have one tall forward and the Hawks would murder us when the ball went in long.

Lonergan has kicked more goals in the second half of the year than anyone else in the team. He doesn't take massive pack marks or kick miraculous goals, but he is a pretty under rated part of our side. My tip is that stokes will miss out.

The guy almost died for his club, such is his bravery.

People give kudos for Hodge for playing on in the prelim, but what about a guy who comes back after almost loosing his life.

Lonergan is inspirational and would be a massive motivator for the team. Do not underestimate his impact either. Was not crash hot against the Dogs, but played a decent game against St Kilda (was a bit wasteful with shots on goal, but did his role) and has been solid since claiming his spot.
Considering also that he bagged 6 in the VFL last year, i would say he is a farily handy player to have on your side and although we have not required it at this stage, he can play back.

Unfortunately, i think it maybe Stokesy who gets the tap. I can't believe i would ever say that, but it is really between him and Wojack. Tough call.

My sentiments exactly. But you missed out on mentioning Lonergans goal assists.

Good point. He was the one who gave off the handball to Rooke in the last qtr and he also set up the Wojcinski [I think] goal in the 1st qtr when he pressured Murphy by tackling him on the Doggies HF line and the ball was turned over.
