Ok now guys I want to make this clear that this is not a tanking related thread.

Guys say you finish last and to be honest I don't think you will I think West Coast will. But anyway say you do finish last and Melbourne finish with over 4 wins pick 1 is yours. Now will you guys take Scully or Lucas/Morabito. I just can't imagine how good your midfield would be: Palmer Hill Scully. You guys will dominate! So what are your guys thoughts on this?

We can only dream but I firmly believe that the Melb and the Eagles will get priority picks and we will end up with pick 5 which will be pick 3, if you know what I mean.

If they win this w/e - then YES!

If not, then.... umm.... yes??? :o

If we could guarantee that they'd beat one of Richmond (at home) / North Melbourne (at home).... then YES!

If we could look into the crystal ball and see that they would lose both of them... then I'd say.... ummm... yes???

I mean NO, NO, NO. :(

So let's hope they beat Port this w/e. :D

Shame on any of you who want to lose the derby. The Eagles won the first 9 in a row, and I won't be happy until the ledger is squared. We will get beaten by Brisbane next week, and then we will see how passionate BOTH the Eagles and Dockers players are about winning the derby.

Go Freo. :thumbsu:

Yeah... I gotta say that I won't be happy to the ledger is in our favour....

strange days are these.... If he AFL had a draft lottery like the NBA then it would eliminate a lot of this talk

I can't see us winning at the G v Melb, so our only chance for another win is the Derby !! And, its the Toast's turn, we've won the past 4 !

If we finished bottom as awesome as it would be to add Scully/Lucas/Morabito to Palmer & Hill I think if we had the opportunity a Key forward like Butcher is a more urgent requirement.

Apparently big man stocks are a bit thin and with us likely to get rid of Campbell & Murphy makes it more urgent that we go for a tall first round. Then we could still get 2 good mids with pp (17ish) & 18 (2nd round).

But if a player like Scully/Lucas/Morabito enabled Pav to go forward full time then it may be worth it.

All this inuendo is useless until the end of the season and draft camp is complete. At this time last year knowone was rating Hill in the Top 10 and Rich was the #1 pick certainty!

All we need to do is pick the best player available regardless if this is a midfielder, forward, back etc...

Worst case senario is west coast gets the priority pick, if they do, they scoop the likes of Morabito and Butcher (Melbourne most likely for Scully and Lucas), but either way, we are going to be able to have a pick at very good talent at our first pick.

Thats what we thought in the nba NF but it isn't the case at all. With the lottery its even more a race to suck the worst just increase your chances of having the most balls in the mix.

Case in point was a few years ago when my home town team the Celts started pulling players with about 3 months left in the season to try to get Oden or Durant. They were up against 2 other teams who were being just as bad as in tanking it. In the end it didn't work out for any of them so the Celts just traded hard and won a title without the guys they were hoping to get in the draft.

The NBA model has shown all of us that nothing stops the talk of tanking. In the NFL there is less talk of it because 1 player rarely makes an immediate difference to a team (like AFL really). They play only 16 games and the worst record gets top pick. Tanking it hardly ever gets any analysis in the media. In the NBA it is an annual event called "Tankapalooza".

FWIW as a newbie to the game I think the priority pick thing hurts everything more than how the draft rankings are made.

It's not like Oden has set the world afire with my Blazers... He's kind of like rip city's Sandilands. Get him through the injurys and some decent court time guys like Roy and Bayliss will thrive even more...
We can't even sign a free agent at the moment...

You happy with gaining Wallace??

I do believe the lottery and removal of priority picks, coupled with a mid season draft and free aganecy will allieviate the current AFL quagmire.... In fact the NBA model should be closely looked at, but thats just my opinion...

Its easy to say now but I always thought Durant was the prize in that draft. Oden always looked like an old man and that he didn't care that much. Durant was a difference maker at both ends. Hopefully Oden pulls it out though, I hate seeing #1's flop no matter who they play for.

Whiffing on Hedo was bad for you guys, he woulda been a nice piece in the system, especially for Roy.

As for the Celts getting Wallace, I hated that move. Didn't need him, Davis is not as good but he's a better fit.

I believe you're spot on about the mid-year draft, the priority picks, just not the lottery. I believe that doing the other things you mention and still reversing the order for the draft will do the job. But hey, what do Yanks know huh? :)

Then who the hell are we playing tonight!?

I see us missing out on the PP with some junktime wins later this year, but we will still be able to snare a very good player (who I hope is Morabito) but Scully would be excellent, and I tihnk if we are in the position to take him we will for sure, WA or not.

I think the AFL draft system is fine, if anything the only thing they could do is ditch the priority picks. Simple, if you finish last you get the first pick. Should not be extra rewards for finished down the bottom a few years in a row.

Would love Scully. Clearly the best talent in the draft and has the potential to be elite.

If we come last, at least we get him a bit of a sure thing.
If we dont come last I think one of Morabito/Lucas will be fine.

We won't be getting Scully. Melbourne are not going to win two more

I don't understand the fuss about this guy. OK maybe he is very good but surely there will be others that will emerge. Some Victorians are carrying on like he is the only A grader available

Mate, he is miles above the rest.

Nevertheless he is well ahead because he has shown that he can handle a tag.

Something even Daniel Rich struggled with last year.

Rather a West Australian tbh. Don't want to get someone who may do a Judd/Warnock

A 'Judd' wouldn't be too bad (Weagles got a premiership out of him and plenty of great memories) ... character-wise he seems a polar opposite to Warnock .
